Praise for Creating a School Library with Impact
Creating a School Library with Impact is an essential toolkit for all those managing or working in a school library. Topics range from practical perennial issues such as stock selection, layout and control, to managing behaviour, information and digital literacy, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies amongst others. With specific chapters relating to managing primary school libraries and CPD for librarians, this will serve as a useful guide for all school librarians.
Judy Broady-Preston, Professor Emerita, Prifysgol Aberystwyth University and Editor, Global Knowledge Memory and Communication (GKMC)
There has never been a more important time for every child in every school to have access to an outstanding school library. This deeply researched, highly practical book is a must-read for education leaders, librarians and all those concerned with young peoples literacy.
Dr Richard Gerver, President of the School Library Association
This book is written by a team of amply experienced and qualified professionals, inspiring confidence in the reader from the very outset. A must read for those just beginning to establish themselves as school library professionals in the UK, it provides thoughtful consideration of how to create library environments that are calm, supportive of diversity, employing technology in productive ways, and conducive to learning and reading.
Key knowledge and skills to be learned in the library (such as digital literacy and academic integrity) are accompanied by vignettes that show how this can be enacted, and there are many practical tips that can be immediately added to the readers existing repertoire. The result is a book that resonates with both expertise and practical value.
Dr Margaret Merga, Merga Consulting and Honorary Adjunct at the University of Newcastle, Australia
Creating a School Library with Impact provides a wealth of knowledge and information for those embarking on a career as a school librarian and is equally valuable for those already in the role aiming to enhance and rejuvenate their activities. It is acknowledged that libraries operate within an environment that is constantly changing and the team of contributing authors have covered a wide range of key topics from the strategic to the practical. They are all experienced practitioners and this shows through in the guidance and encouragement provided, supported where appropriate with underpinning theory. As an LIS educator this book will be a valuable addition to module reading lists.
Dr Carolynn Rankin, Associate Lecturer, School of Education, Ulster University and IFLA Libraries for Children and Young Adults Standing Committee Member
Publications about school librarianship often focus on the functions of the school library and lose sight of the human component. What makes this book special is that while it provides necessary practical advice for school librarians to deal with materials, business requirements, working with students and more, it also reveals the principles of contemporary school librarianship what gives meaning to the work of the school library. Reading is considered as not only an activity that enables the acquisition of information, but also as something that forms students by finding books that inspire and engage them.
Creating a School Library with Impact will be relevant for all school librarians who want to encourage reader development, set meaningful priorities and make the library the heart of the school. It is an excellent tool for both beginners and experienced librarians, who will find new incentives and
inspiration for their work in the examples, scenarios and case studies.
