Its Time To Solve The Procrastination Puzzle

Few resources are as precious and as limited as time. We live in a fast-paced world where every second counts. New opportunities and advances in technology are making our lives simultaneously easier and harder than they have ever been before.

Our days are filled with seemingly never-ending emails, meetings, blogs, books, newspapers to read, new skills to learn and new technology to keep abreast of. Added to that, owning a smartphone means you can easily get through a few more emails at home while commuting or even on holiday.

Its little wonder many of us feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Were living in an epidemic of busy, and some of the technology that helps us be more productive is also fragmenting our focus. How many times have you picked up your smartphone just for a minute to check your emails, and found yourself on Facebook an hour later, phone still in hand?

Everybody is busy. We're working more hours, commuting further distances, consuming more content, watching more television and learning more new skills. Time pressures and distractions are everywhere, and it can be overwhelming to know how to deal with them.

Poor time management doesnt just impact your work. It increases stress and can impact your health. The longer it continues, the more tired and frustrated you become as you try to keep on top of your never-ending to-do-list. Even your relationships can become strained when you dont have enough time to devote to the important people in your life.

Time management strategies can benefit anyone who feels like they cant fit enough into their day. Here are some examples of real people who could use the strategies in this book.

Real Life Case Study: Gayle

Gayle is an executive PA, whose team was recently downsized. She went from being responsible for one company executive to two, overnight. Her workload almost doubled, and while both her bosses understood it would take time for her to adjust, there were still a lot of tasks that needed urgent completion. To keep up, she increased the hours she was working, took work home with her and skipped lunch.

Before long she noticed her stress was building, and despite being hardworking and generally efficient, shes now struggling to keep on top of things. She is suffering from anxiety symptoms and beginning to make mistakes with simple tasks.

Real Life Case Study: Simon

Simon is a law student. His studies are intensive, and his goal is to graduate with honors and become a junior partner in a law firm.

Twice a week, Simon plays football for his college team. He also works two evenings a week, plus one weekend day, at a local fast food restaurant to pay off his student loans. He mostly manages to keep up with school work by pulling all-night study marathons on the nights he isnt working.

Its now his final year, and his increased workload means that he is really feeling the pressure. He cant afford to not work, and he enjoys playing football, but he feels like something has to give.

Real Life Case Study: Joseph

Joseph is an entrepreneur who works from home. He quit his corporate finance job to start a new coaching venture, and the flexibility of working from home appealed to him as he has a young family.

Building his business has been a struggle, and he often has to perform tasks that arent his primary skill, such as closing new clients and developing a website. He fills most of his day with one-hour client calls and allows two hours for generating new leads and completing admin work. Hed like to have more time to work on his business, and not just in it, but that seems impossible at the minute.

In the early days, he finished work at 5 pm every day to help his wife with their three young children. Recently, as his business has grown, he's finding it more and more difficult to switch off. As his to-do list becomes longer, he's spending more and more time catching up with admin tasks and answering client emails out of hours.

In his coaching practice, he advises others on the importance of work-life balance, but he feels like a hypocrite as he isnt currently achieving that for himself.

Real Life Case Study: Serena

Serena is a stay at home mom, whose husband works for a large accountancy firm. Her two children are 6 months, and 3 years old. When she first decided to be a stay at home mom, Serena imagined that she would spend her days playing and baking with the kids. Nap time would be spent cleaning the house, and her husband would come home each evening to a perfectly clean home and happy, relaxed wife. Perhaps, once the kids started preschool, she would take up a hobby or two, and join a gym.

The reality is less idyllic. Serena spends her days running errands, attending play dates, navigating fussy eating issues and handling toddler tantrums. If the children do nap shes too exhausted to clean the house. By the time her husband gets home, the house still isnt tidy, and Serena just wants to sleep.

Her husband is frustrated at the lack of quality time they get together, and Serena feels that she doesnt have enough time for herself. She barely has any energy left to keep up with the hobbies and regular exercise that she enjoyed before having two children. She feels almost permanently exhausted and craves enough time to do something for herself.

These are just a few real-life scenarios where time management techniques can have a real impact. Almost all of us experience a feeling that we dont have enough time on a frequent basis.

This book is to help you identify how to maximize the time you do have and get more done. Well look at the reasons behind poor time management, and how some habits are time-stealers disguised as productivity boosters.

You'll understand why some people manage time better than others, the science and psychology behind getting organized and being effective and learn tools and strategies to start achieving more of your goals.

These strategies are suitable for anybody wanting to gain back control of their time. Whether youre a student, businessman, working mom or a homemaker, youll find useful tools and techniques to implement. The vast majority of these can be adapted for any person, at any stage of their lives to make the most of the 24 hours we all get in a day.

There are no one-size-fits-all solutions to time management, but with the tips and techniques outlined in this book you will be able to:

- Identify where your time should be spent

- Learn how to work smarter, not harder

- Tackle procrastination head-on with easy techniques

- Delegate or outsource the right tasks

- Make time for the things that matter to you

- Enjoy a true work-life balance.

By applying the proven time management strategies laid out in the following chapters, you will be able to take back control over your time and get more done.

Chapter One Effective Time Management

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for thats the stuff life is made of.
Benjamin Franklin.

A Brief History of Time Management

In many ways, mankind has always been seeking to understand and control time. Even prehistoric man understood time in the sense of the time between sunrise and sunset, the changing seasons, and the most effective times to hunt, farm or migrate.
