While it is not possible to write a complete book of anything so multifarious and multitudinous as baskets, I have tried to bring to wider notice those works of mans skill which appear to me useful and beautiful; most of which are not beyond the range of the normal craftsman, whether young and green or older and wiser, provided he or she is not too easily discouraged nor in too much of a hurry.
Some of the photographs and drawings appeared in my previous book Baskets and Basketry, but more than half are new and I must acknowledge a debt to the many more kind people who have lent photographs and baskets. For the drawings I am indebted not only to David Button who made the original ones, but also to Susan Smith and Malcolm Couch. Photographs 23942 are reproduced with the kind permission of Sue H. Stephcnson and her publishers Van Nostrand Reinhold & Company, New York.
For his help with willow techniques and instructions I am deeply grateful to Alistair Heseltine as well as to those many craftsmen I have visited, watched at work and talked to about the craft. Friends in America, especially Carol Hart, Anne Murray and Sue Stephenson, are also forever owed a debt of gratitude for letters, photographs, press cuttings and books, and for introductions to some of the great collections. Others in Holland, France, Italy and Germany have given the same help, time and interest. Not least I value the support that all these friends have given me through their belief in the vital future of our craft and in the pleasure it gives to us and to many others in a mechanised world.
I must thank Doctor W. O. Hassall, Assistant Librarian at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, for help in my early days of research, and recommend a wider use of his splendid film strips on the manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford; also the Museum of English Rural Life at Reading for allowing me to use photographs of so many of the baskets we collected together. The Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas (CoSIRA) I thank again, and also K. G. Stott at Long Ashton Research Station of Bristol University, who knows more about the genus Salix than anyone else.
Lastly I am grateful to my husband for his encouragement and practical help in so many ways, and for his interest and willingness to act as my memory and second pair of ears.
Note to Second Edition
Paul Riley has done five nice drawings to illustrate the new chapter and the new photographs come from many sources. I am grateful to those who let me use them.
Of our American friends I must say with great regret that Marianne Wilson has left us. I am sure that her wonderful collection of dolls houses with their miniature baskets have found a home.
