This book is dedicated to my daughter Misaki, who grew the most amazing parsley plant in 2020! She also loves eating our homegrown basil on tomatoes. And she always laughs at my puns about thyme/time!

When I was growing up, my German mother always had fresh homegrown herbs near at hand. Whether she was adding parsley to a stew or sauce, using fresh dill to make German pickles, or making fresh mint or fennel tea, the smell of herbs always filled our kitchen. After I got a place of my own, I maintained my mothers tradition of growing herbs. My garden included some of the same herbs my mother had grown and loved as well as new and less familiar herbs that piqued my interest.
For more than 15 years now, Ive been growing food on an eighth of an acre in a suburban lot on the west coast of Canada. As a complement to my 225-square-foot vegetable garden and nine fruit trees, I keep containers of rosemary, basil, and oregano. Plus, I have herbs scattered elsewhere in the garden, including a thick, aromatic hedge of creeping thyme that borders the raspberry bed.
Although I have plenty of space in my urban homestead to grow a wide variety of produce, the great thing about herbs is that you dont need a large plot of land to grow them successfully. A couple of containers on a balcony, patio, or deck will work. You can even grow them indoors if you dont have any outdoor space.
Whether youre envisioning a small container garden in a sunny window or a raised bed in your yard, this book will provide the information you need to get started. Ill walk you through the issues youll need to consider in order to choose the setup that best suits your space and lifestyle. Ill also provide practical information about tools, seeds, transplants, and soil as well as detailed profiles of 40 herbs, so you can maximize your harvests.
But the joy of growing herbs doesnt end with the harvest. The best part is using them, and this book contains 80 recipes for making the most of your homegrown herbs. Theres no question that fresh herbs make everything taste better, from roasted ).
Whether you are new to herb gardening or looking to improve your existing herb garden, this book will not only help you grow healthy and productive plants, but will also provide you with a wide variety of ideas for how to use them.
Lets get started planning your herb garden!
