M edicine, aromatics, flavor, and more. The plants we identify as herbs have so much to give. They offer substances to heal the body, living fragrance, and a harvest of tastes for cooking. The colors and textures of herbs mingled in the landscape may also invite pollinators into the garden. No other group of plants offers as much diversity as herbs. Their usefulnessboth in the garden and in our livesis clear.

My goal in this book is to introduce you to an abundant choice of herbs both historical and modern to grow for their varied usefulness as I show you how to create and care for exciting container herb gardens.

    WHAT ARE HERBS?

A simple botanical definition of herbs describes them as soft-stemmed, leafy, herbaceous plants, not necessarily woody like trees. Herbaceous plants die back to the ground every year and can be annual (living one year), biennial (living two years), or perennial (living many years). Herbs are plants that have very distinctive essential oils in their soft plant tissues. These complex oils are what give these plants fragrance, flavor, and perhaps medicinal properties, along with all of the other qualities that lead us to grow them.

To expand your herbal horizons, in this book were going to explore beyond herbaceous herbs and also consider herbs that are shrubs and trees. Large and distinct woody plants, such as witch hazel (Hamamelis spp.) and the true tea plant (Camellia sinensis), are highly valued as herbs and lend their tall silhouettes to large potted gardens. Trees and shrubs create layers of interest and provide options for well-rounded and distinct herb gardens in containers.

Discovering both the common and uncommon herbs featured in this book will also give you a new perspective on herbalism and a plants multiple uses. The plant that flavors your pasta sauce might also be a great host plant for your pollinator garden. Or you may discover a unique flowering evergreen shrub thats also used to make a nurturing tea.

    WHY GROW HERBS IN CONTAINERS?

Smaller homes, apartments, and downsizing all translate to having less space to garden, yet we still can have the delights an herb garden offers. Potted gardens are an easy way to fill our lives with herbs, even in limited space. Besides, herb gardens in containers are among the easiest types of gardens to grow. No weeding for hours, bending over, or even keeping a storehouse of tools to care for it all. Containers are the perfect garden style for busy people and limited spaces.

Growing in any type of container affords the opportunity to plant a garden almost anywhere. It lets you place favorite herbs right where you need them. You do not need acres or even a large garden plot to grow herbs in containers.

Gardens in containers can be tailored and sized to fit on even the tiniest windowsill. If space is a rare commodity and you have room for just a few things, why not choose plants that give back and enrich your life, even if its just one beloved herb growing on the kitchen counter and harvested for cooking? Or perhaps, if youre lucky, its many different herbs, crammed into whatever space you have.

Container gardening is all about the ability to fit a garden into your lifestyle. Pottery and other types of containers add a decorative touch, while herbs add their unique fragrance, flavor, and texture to the planting design. For some gardeners, containers are the only option to grow a garden, and for others, pottery becomes a way to lend creativity to larger spaces. Annual summer flowering herbs, such as calendula, potted in color-coordinated containers and tucked into permanent beds give options to change plants with the season.

Gardeners who grow herbs in containers realize their multiple benefits. Many container styles are portable and moveable, which makes a good option for those who rent a home or apartment. Another advantage to growing in containers is the ability to downsize and adapt gardening to changing physical abilities. Pottery size and style choices can be made to accommodate wheelchairs and ease physical movement should the need arise.

    CONTAINER GARDENS FOR ALL

My garden is a mix of ornamental planting borders, raised veggie beds, and a small patch of lawn. It is a pretty typical urban plot. So, why do I love my container gardens when I have all this space to garden? Planted pottery is a good way to have my herbs nearby, making them convenient and accessible. Theyre right outside the back kitchen door when I am cooking or creating something with herbal ingredients. Glazed, colorful pottery is also a design element I use in my existing planting beds. I tuck bright-colored containers into my gardens and can move them in and out when I want to change things up or add color when other plants are out of season.

In contrast, my children have a different perspective on how they garden. My eldest daughter has a young family, pets, and a home with a small plot of land. A playset, swings, a slide, and a large fire pit for warming up at family gatherings and roasting marshmallows take up the outside space. There is even a small kid-friendly zip line. Her garden consists of a few containers off the back porch because other areas of the landscape are saved for family activity.

My other children live in city apartments with tiny balconies. Pottery, soil, and other garden necessities have to be brought in by stairs or the elevator. Their spaces are just large enough to have seating for morning coffee, but they still share the love of plants passed down from their mom. Containers are tucked all along the edges of their balconies. Their lifestyles define their plant choices; one likes to cook and the other prefers groupings of color and flowers.
