Introduction
A BIT OF HISTORY
A Gods eye, or ojo de Dios (in Spanish), is a sacred
object of the Huichol, an indigenous people who live in
the Sierra Madre region in the northwest area of Mexico.
For them, the Gods eye is an entryway into the spirit
world. The handmade spiritual eye has the power to
see and understand that which is not understood by the
physical eye, and it gives access to the spiritual world.
In Huichol tradition, a Gods eye is woven in solitude,
either as a meditation practice or to physically represent
a prayer. The weaving is a reminder of holistic unity,
communicating to the weaver that everything is
connected.
For the Huichol people, every act in life is an opportunity
for prayer: planting, harvesting, weaving, face painting,
making objects from pearls, pilgrimage to collect a
sacred plant, the use of peyote, and more. Their lives are
a constant communication with the spiritual world.
In a Gods eye, you can see the five essential cardinal
directions: north, south, east, west, and center. The
four branches of the wooden cross also refer to the four
constituent elements of life: fire, earth, air, and water.
This sacred object is created for many occasions. For
example, at the birth of his child, a father might weave
the central eye. Then, each year until the child turns
five, he will add a band of yarn in a different color.
Through this practice, he asks the spiritual world for the
protection, health, and well-being of his child. Once the
child is old enough, they are capable of making other
Gods eyes on their own.
The ritual practice can also be found as a part of
learning/wisdom circles, where elders help the
youngest to make Gods eyes and pass on the tradition.
