You know it as New Zealandand maybe even Middle-earthbut between the spectacular shores of this picture-perfect Pacific island nation, Kiwis are increasingly using its Mori name, Aotearoa, which means the land of the long white cloud.

Legend has it that a Polynesian demigod by the name of Maui fished Aotearoas North Island from the depths of the Tasman Sea. Maui, it is said, sat battling his catch from the cocoon of his mighty canoe, represented by South Island, anchored beneath by the smaller Stewart Island, or Rakiura. From the increasing embrace of indigenous place names and substituting the occasional te reo (Mori language) into everyday conversation, to public artworks, cultural feasts and performances, dedicated museums, and pastoral expanses peppered with intricately carved marae (meeting houses), Aotearoa New Zealands rich native culture is celebrated nationwide.

Equally celebrated is Aotearoas natural splendor. All Kiwis, whether Mori or Pkeh (European New Zealanders) possess a proud and profound sense of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) for these legendary landsaround one-third of the country is protected by public reserves and national parks, including a handful of UNESCO World Heritage sites. From its subtropical northern tip, Aotearoa unfurls dramatically southward. At its North Island center sits a geothermal heartland alive with belching fumaroles, hissing vents, and towering volcanoes. The spine of South Island comprises the snow-kissed Southern Alps/K Tiritiri o te Moana, laced with glacial lakes, ski fields, and iconic treks. There are beaches of golden sand, white sand, pink sand, and even iron-rich black. Protected ocean reserves are patrolled by orca, whales, and endemic dolphins and penguins. Similarly, strange feathered critters such as the kiwi bird, a taonga (treasure), wander ancient goblin forests that sit beneath swirls of whispering mist. Surf it, hike it, bike it, skydive or bungee jump into it, or road trip around itfew destinations possess such variety in such a concentrated, explorable package.

Sophisticated cities such as Auckland and Wellington are backed by internationally acclaimed wineries of Hawkes Bay, Marlborough, and Otago, and a bounty of boutique breweries. Fast-cementing Aotearoa New Zealands ever-growing reputation as an epicurean haven, well-traveled chefs embrace the countrys cultural diversity, their dishes influenced by the Pacific, Europe, and Asia, all with a Kiwi twist.

So, kia ora, be prepared to be sated by the rich produce, awed by the majesty, and humbled by the humanity of Aotearoa New Zealand, the land of the long white cloud.
