iRules: What Every Tech-Healthy Family Needs to Know about Selfies, Sexting, Gaming, and Growing up: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "iRules: What Every Tech-Healthy Family Needs to Know about Selfies, Sexting, Gaming, and Growing up" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

As Janell Burley Hofmann, mother of five, wrapped her 13-year-olds iPhone on Christmas Eve, she was overwhelmed by questions: Will my children learn to sit and wonder without Googling? Should I know their passwords for online accounts? Will they experience the value of personal connection without technology?
To address her concerns, she outlined boundaries and expectations in a contract for her son to sign upon receiving his first cell phone. When Hofmanns editor at The Huffington Post posted the contract, now known as iRules, it resonated on a massive scale and went viral, resulting in a tsunami of media coverage and requests. It quickly became apparent that people across the country were hungry for more.
In iRules, Hofmann provides families with the tools they need to find a balance between technology and human interaction through a philosophy she calls Slow Tech Parenting. In the book, she educates parents about the online culture tweens and teens enter the minute they go online, exploring issues like cyberbullying, friend fail, and sexting, as well as helping parents create their own iRules contracts to fit their families needs. As funny and readable as it is prescriptive, iRules will help parents figure out when to unplug and how to stay in sync with the changing world of technology, while teaching their children self-respect, integrity, and responsibility.

A Note to the Reader

M y children were yelled at in the making of this book. I lose my patience often. I make ridiculous threats like If you dont stop fighting, there will be no Halloween! I once gave my kids a bag of chocolate chips and locked the door to my office so I could do an Australian radio interview. My commitment to this family is downright overwhelming, as Im sure yours is too. But weve got to be willing to show up and do the work. When you read this book, I am inviting you to grow, learn, and parent with me. This book is an intimate portrayal of the existence of technology in our lives and our homes, but also the beliefs, values, and stories that help shape our experiences with it. I share pieces of my life, the successes and the imperfections, as an offering. Take what you need. I am an expert only on what my family needs and what works within our home. I encourage you to do the same for your family. But I do believe the iRules model will bring balance, dialogue, and success to your familys relationship with technology.

Within these chapters, we will most definitely be exploring technology, its cultural impact, and the relationship our children have with it. But underneath that platform, we will be examining our truths, our stories, our lives. We cannot talk about parenting without calling up our core family values and beliefs. I invite you to fully join the conversation. As you continue through these pages, you will be given instructions on how to make your own family iRules. A collection of iRules makes a living, breathing agreement for behavior related to technologyone that suits your home, your parenting style, and your needs. iRules will allow you and your family to build healthy relationships with the technology used inside and outside your home.

We are more powerful together.

Janell

The Contract

Dear Gregory,

Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. Hot damn! You are a good and responsible thirteen-year-old boy and you deserve this gift. But with the acceptance of this present come rules and regulations. Please read through the following contract. I hope that you understand it is my job to raise you into a well-rounded, healthy young man that can function in the world and coexist with technology, not be ruled by it. Failure to comply with the following list will result in termination of your iPhone ownership.

I love you madly and look forward to sharing several million text messages with you in the days to come.

It is my phone. I bought it. I pay for it. I am loaning it to you. Arent I the greatest?

I will always know the password.

If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello, use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if the screen reads Mom or Dad. Not ever.

Hand the phone to one of your parents promptly at 7:30 p.m. every school night and every weekend night at 9:00 p.m. It will be shut off for the night and turned on again at 7:30 a.m. If you would not make a call to someones landline because their parents might answer first, then do not call or text. Listen to those instincts and respect other families like we would like to be respected.

It does not go to school with you. Have a conversation with the people you text. Its a life skill. Half days, field trips, and after-school activities will require special consideration.

If it falls into the toilet, smashes on the ground, or vanishes into thin air, you are responsible for the replacement cost or repairs. Mow a lawn, babysit, stash some birthday money. It will happen, you should be prepared.

Do not use this technology to lie to, fool, or deceive another human being. Do not involve yourself in conversations that are hurtful to others. Be a good friend first or stay the hell out of the crossfire.

Do not text, e-mail, or say anything through this device that you would not say in person.

Do not text, e-mail, or say anything to someone that you would not say out loud with their parents in the room. Censor yourself.
