Introduction
Destiny: The Taken King is an online, shared-world experience. The game uses various systems, currencies, activity types and consumables as ways to earn rewards and progress a character. This guide will cover some of the more nuanced aspects of the game, while leaving plenty of room for discovery and player creativity.
When playing Destiny: The Taken King for the first time, new players will have the option of playing through the game with a brand new, un-leveled character or using the provided Spark of Light consumable to immediately reach level 25 and access all story content in Destiny: The Taken King. No matter what you choose, there are a few best practices to help you maximize your time while playing Destiny: The Taken King.
Getting Started
Bounties and Quests
Destiny: The Taken King offers players Bounties and Quests to track progress and offer bonus experience for completing in-game tasks. Bounties may be redeemed within character inventory, and sometimes have a chance to drop materials or items. Some quests will require players to visit specific vendors in the Tower or the Reef, where others will present the next step directly from character inventory.
Factions
Factions exist to give players the opportunity to earn reputation in exchange for Faction-exclusive gear and items. Factions vendors are located in the tower. Players may exchange Motes of Light, Weapon parts, Armor materials, and Ammo Synthesis in exchange for Faction Reputation. Upon each rank up, players will receive a Faction Package, which will contain Motes of Light, Strange Coins, and a chance for Legendary Weapons and Gear.
Beginner Strategies
Relax & Make sure to Enjoy Your-self
Even in its streamlined year-two version, Destiny hits new players with a ton of information. It can be tempting to overthink things and become paralyzed.
Yes, you can level up faster and get better gear quicker if you prioritize some things over other things. Yes, you can ruthlessly optimize your time with the game and have a cooler gun or helmet than your friend. But now more than ever, the best thing you can do is simply relax and play the game.
Play with Friends
While it is possible to play Destiny solo and have a pretty good time, this game is much better when you play with a friend, or better, a group of friends. This might require some legwork on your part, but: Try to find out which of your friends have the game on your console of choice. This might require you to put out a question on Facebook, which might feel kind of revealing. Its okay. Just ask! Youd be surprised who you might re-connect with, and Destiny friends tend to beget more Destiny friends. Before long youll have a regular raid crew.
Bigger Numbers is the Best Goal
Obviously, the real goal of Destiny is to have fun. (See tip #1.) But according to the games systems, the players goal in Destiny is the same as in lots of video games: To get better and better shit with higher and higher numbers attached to it. Youll hit level 40 pretty quickly, which feels good, but that number doesnt mean very much. Your light level is the important number, and you want to get it as high as you can.
Focus on one class for now.
You can have three characters, and Id eventually suggest trying one of each class. Theyre all fun! For starting out, however, its best to pick one class and stick with it. More than ever, Destiny lets you get the most out of maining a single character, so thats the way to go.
Select the Most Appealing Class to You
If youre starting out in Destiny, your first question is probably what class should I play? In some ways, the classes are similar. They all use the same weapons, and theyre all equally skilled with them. Theres no sniper class or melee class or anything like that. But the classes each do have specific strengths and weaknesses, mostly tied to their rechargeable super ability. Heres the gist:
Warlocks: Good all-around classes with a really powerful melee attack and a float, maneuverable jump. Super abilities include: A vortex bomb, the ability to resurrect yourself on dying, and a chain-lightning power that destroys nearby enemies.
Titans: Solid, sturdy class with a kind of shitty melee, the highest jump of all three classes, and tough armor. Super abilities include: An electricity-charged body slam, a protective bubble that you and your teammates can hide under, and the ability to throw exploding, flaming hammers.
Hunters: The most distinct class, with high maneuverability, lower armor, and a double-jump that doesnt go as high as the other two classes. Hunters have lots of cool tricks, including gas-bombs that can blind enemies and the ability to go invisible and escape hairy situations. Super abilities include: A wicked arc-blade attack that lets you cleave through foes, a golden gun that gives you three extremely powerful shots from a flaming pistol, and a magical arrow that tethers enemies together and makes them more vulnerable.
