Seasonal Slow Knitting: Thoughtful Projects for a Handmade Year: summary, description and annotation

Thiessens new book is all about promoting creativity at a slower pace, offering advice on finding the time and space to knit in a restful, calming way. -The Knitter
Slow Knitting introduced crafters to a process of more mindful making through five basic tenets: source carefully, make thoughtfully, think seasonally, experiment fearlessly, and explore openly. Now, this seasonal approach encourages knitters to delve deeper into those concepts, applying them to everyday making through a series of essays, projects, and patterns that explore the life of a knitter throughout the year. Organized similarly to a seasonal planting guide or farmers almanac, each chapter and section is designed to identify and encourage small ways that knitters may begin to employ noticeable change: organizing your yarn stash, carving out time for knitting, and starting on that baby blanket in a timely manner. The ideas explored here add up to a fuller, more mindful year, all through the joyful experience that is knitting.

introduction:
returning to slow knitting
In early 2015, I submitted the idea for my
book
Slow Knitting
to Abrams. The pro-
posal was my first: my first attempt to write
a book, my first attempt to pitch an idea this
large to a completely unknown entity. In
my email, I included a mood board, a single
essay, and some notes about what I wanted
to write: the idea that other knittersand
other craftersmay have been having the
same feelings I was. I loved my craft, but I
felt overwhelmed by knittings new wave, an
onslaught of what was a must-knit, which
yarns were must-haves, what the color or
notion of the moment was. I was longing for
a sense of place within a craft that had been
mine since I was a child but that was feeling
increasingly more alien as I got older.
I loved casting on new projects, but not
the idea that I needed to make them quickly,
or that I needed to become a handmade-gift
factory. I channeled my passion for knitting
into a career in marketing, and I was becom-
ing fatigued from the need to constantly be
making something that other knitters would
admire and talk about, while simultaneously
guiding companies toward how to sell and
share their products. The funny thing about
knitting is that it feels inauthentic amid the
messaging of constant sales. The idea that
you have to buy more yarn, buy more pat-
terns, and churn things out is incongruent
with what knitting is: a peaceful moment to
yourself, time away from the busyness of the
world we live in, a celebration of material
and patience. To me, this craft is authentic-
ity and simplicity at their finest.
After the book was published in 2017,
I discovered that much of my own knitting
practice needed to change if I was going
to match the values I had put forth in
Slow
Knitting
. My stash seemed full to bursting,
so I pulled anything and everything I wasnt
madly in love with and sold it. I began slow-
ing down my buying of patterns and more
carefully selecting not just yarn but cloth-
ing, food, and items for my day-to-day life. It
seemed disingenuous to go speak to how we
should support small business, small farmers,
and slow fashion when I wasnt doing it in
every category of my life. I began a transition
to buying less, using less, and expanding the
tenets of my book to areas beyond my craft.
Seasonal Slow Knitting
is, in a way, both
a deeper and a wider dive into the initial con-
cepts I set forth to be shared and lived. In
the pages of this book, I hope that you will
discover small ways to change your daily,
weekly, monthly, and seasonal knitting prac-
tices to make slower crafting a reality for
you. I hope that youll find a single sentence,
a tip, or maybe a pattern that resonates and
that you can carry with you. And I hope that
these words inspire you to continue to make
and grow.

about this book
Like
Slow Knitting
, this book is as much
about the philosophy behind why we knit,
and why we love to create, as it is about
following a pattern or working on a proj-
ect. The book is arranged seasonally, and is
designed to guide us through our knitting
practice as the weather and world change
around us. Whenever you pick up the book
and begin reading, I recommend starting
with the season that youre in, before read-
ing the whole volume.
Each of the patterns was designed
with practicality in mind. I curated a selec-
tion of garments, accessories, and home
goods that could fill needs and fit seamlessly
into any wardrobe and lifestyle. As a result,
most patterns are fairly beginner-accessible
but should be enjoyable for knitters of any
level. I have included notes before each pat-
tern to round out the experience and give
helpful advice, so make sure you read them
before starting any project.
