INTRODUCTION
ve been asked many times over the years to describe my style of decorating,
and each and every time I circle back to one word: pretty. I decorate houses all
over the country for all different kinds of people, but somewhere along the way,
I realized that no matter where I am, I always apply the same principles
the Principles of Pretty Roomsto create spaces that entice and enchant peo-
ple, making them feel good, comfortable, and at home as soon as they enter.
Some rooms require you to think; they force you to constantly look around
to notice different details that you may not have seen at first. These sorts of
spaces are often architectural marvels, and their decoration follows suit. Pretty
rooms, on the other hand, take the edge off, inviting you to relax and unwind.
Thats because pretty isnt complex or complicated. Rather, its simplicity and lack
of fussiness help you design rooms that are warm, welcoming, and the furthest
thing from intimidating. Any space that feels peaceful and tranquilwhether tra-
ditional or modern, neutral or colorful, nearby or far-flungcan be pretty.
Pretty pleases the eye and eases the mind. In that way, pretty itself is easy: easy
to live with, and easy for you to achieve in your own home, too. Now more than ever,
we want our spaces to be sanctuaries, safely allowing us to escape from the realities
of everyday life and work. The Principles of Pretty Rooms allow you to create rooms
that do just that.
My Southern roots cultivated my natural affinity for pretty. While I was
growing up in northern Florida, I made frequent trips to my grandparents farm
in Alabama, and I managed to find pretty everywhere I looked. My four brothers

and I grew up in a nine-hundred-square-foot apartment above a garage, but I
never thought of it as anything other than a big, beautiful house. It had high ceil-
ings with exposed wooden rafters and walls clad in warm cedar. A round window
set in each of its gabled ends flooded it with natural light. The fact that it sat right
on the beach didnt hurt, either.
At her simple Alabama farmhouse, meanwhile, my grandmother cultivated a
whole walls worth of African violets, setting them on three shelves in front of a
south-facing window. They werent fancy or expensive, but they left a lasting im-
pression. The warmth of the sun hitting them, the richness of the color of their
flowers, and the velvety texture of their leaves made them seem like the most beau-
tiful thing in the world. The same was true of the cut-glass decanters full of colored
water that she placed in another window, and the handmade quilts, bedspreads, and
crocheted blankets that added a sense of softness throughout her house.
We Southerners have a special talent for creating beautiful moments like these,
and for making pretty seem effortless. But it actually takes careful planning and
thoughtful execution to turn a space into an oasis of pretty. My goal for this book is
to help you achieve the romance and tranquility of pretty in your own home. My
Principles of Pretty Rooms (opposite) will serve as your primer, one that takes the
guesswork out of making pretty possible.
And pretty very much is possible for anyone to achieve, anywhere. Thats be-
cause it is exceptionally flexible. Unlike more prescribed aestheticsminimalist
modernism, for examplepretty knows no limits of style or era.
The three sections of this book take a look at pretty in practice in a variety of
houses I designed in a trio of different settingsin the city, in the country, and at
the beach. Each one benefits from a different set of elements specific to its setting
and its owners desires, but they all ultimately delight the senses because they adhere
to the overarching principles that I apply to every interior.
I know youll find these principles as useful as I do. Decorating with them
makes pretty a piece of cakeand a beautifully decorated one, too.
