Introduction

T hank you for downloading this eBook, Tips for De-cluttering your wardrobe. Through this book, we intend to shed some light on the concept of living a clutter free life. We have shared some interesting and smart tips for decluttering one of the most essential corners in every house, The Wardrobe.

Decluttering is a cleansing process that deals not just with the physical activity of getting rid of useless items and organizing the essential items in an orderly manner but also encompasses the emotional aspect of feeling lighter by doing the right things in terms of providing for a fresher and cleaner living space for you and your family.

The very process of decluttering might bring about temporary anxiety in a person but in a broader perspective, it will only help one in maintaining a cleaner house and usher in a sense of relief that will last for a long time.

The concept, however, is not limited to people on the verge of moving out of a place and is universally applicable. Any person at any point in life can take up the challenge of de-cluttering their house or room and learning to let go of things that have really no value except for sentimental or ethical value. Taking the right steps towards attaining that goal becomes important.

The universal mantra of less is more is something that should be kept in mind while going about doing the needful in terms of de-cluttering. Now, nobody is asking one to do away with the entire gamut of their belongings and start afresh. The answer lies in striking a fine balance between knowing exactly what to hold on to and what to dispose off.

It is also essential to remember that the process involves making space by doing away with belongings but that does not mean one is allowed to fill up that space again with other useless things. Garnering and exercising control over yourself and your belongings becomes important.

It is needed that a person puts in their 100% into the process, in order to register success in the very concept of living a life free from clutter. What is more important is to be appreciative of the things that one possesses and enjoy their true value.

It might all sound like rocket science at first but trust me, once you get down to doing the dirty work, it will only imbibe a sense of achievement in you and side effects if any, will only be therapeutic.

Chapter 1: Benefits of a Clutter-free Life

L et us begin this journey by understanding how de-cluttering can help you in life. Here are some of the obvious benefits of de-cluttering

Less anxiety

One of the primary benefits of a de-cluttered lifestyle is mental peace. It is a known fact, the more items you possess, the more anxiety they bring you; in terms of safe keeping. You can successfully deal with this by sticking to the concept of only owning things that are essential for survival. Give up on stuff that you dont use, dont like anymore or doesnt fit.

More Space

If you get rid of certain items from your wardrobe, you are making a lot of space for more stuff. Good enough motivation to shop more right?

Easy access

Once the excess clutter is cleared away, you will be in a great position to access clothes from your wardrobe with ease. You wont have to move around or push aside things in order to reach things you need.

Donations

When you narrow down to the basic items you need or want, you will be left with a lot of belongings. Although parting with them might be difficult, the joy of donating your clothes to the needy is immense, and it will counter-balance the sadness that comes with disposing them. Donation also evokes a sense of pride, for having done a good deed.

Sense of control

Every person in the world craves to have a sense of control over themselves and their surroundings. In order to satiate that very need, there is no better place to start off than your wardrobe. You can have control over your belongings and decide what to keep and what to give away, and derive a sense of satisfaction.

Easy Maintenance

If you manage to keep only items that you need, it will be much easy to clean and maintain your wardrobe from time to time. The frequency of cleaning will also reduce, thereby saving your energy and resources. It also gives you enough free time to concentrate on other (better) things.

Maximum use for existing items

When there will only be a limited number of items at your disposal, they will be put to constant use, allowing you to use them to their full potential. The problem of buyers remorse will be eliminated, wherein you will stop worrying about the money you wasted in buying clothes (which a lot of us do very often) that you will not ever be able to use.

Chapter 2: Types of Clutter in the wardrobe

W ith the ease and comfort with which we indulge in online shopping, our wardrobes are overflowing with stuff that we dont need. The problem with most of us is we are extremely susceptible to buy from sales and use discount coupons, and end up buying stuff we didnt plan on buying in the first place. The result of this is an overtly ill managed wardrobe, which needs constant maintenance from time to time.

Most people dont realize that their clutter comes from several sources and not from just one particular source. Clutter is mostly trash that has accumulated over time and serves no purpose, other than staying put in your wardrobe. The source is generally tied to a habit that stems from either a habit of hoarding or the tendency of getting over-attached to things for no reason. Addressing the vital cause is the first step towards de-cluttering.

Identifying the types

Clutter can be bifurcated into a few different types. The bifurcation is based on the source of the clutter. The source of the clutter may not always be your individual choice and maybe forced upon by external factors.

  • Sale Clutter -In this day and age most stores adopt the sale strategy to lure customers into buying clothes and accessories that may or may not be useful to them. Buyers are at more risk of investing in items that are, more often than not, useless for them. These sale items make up for a majority of the clutter in wardrobes. Once you successfully identify the sale clutter in your wardrobe, measures should be taken to avoid the tendency of falling for retail marketing tricks again.
  • Freebie Clutter -Whenever a product comes free with another product, the buyer either buys it for the free product or because the product works out to be cost effective. Either way, the investment stops being lucrative when one realizes that the product itself and/or the freebie are more or less useless. Staying away from freebies helps in curbing clutter.
  • Nostalgic Clutter -Family heirlooms or pass downs are one of the most basic sources of clutter in a regular wardrobe. Be it mummys old prom dress or grandpas waist-coast, most family nostalgia ends up being nothing but useless, as one will never be able to use them, since more often than not they will be outdated and not in trend. They may be exquisite and bring back nostalgia but are nothing but pure clutter, unless you use them.
  • Aspirational Clutter -Some people have the habit of buying an item in hope of using it in the future, in case a desirable outcome for it comes about. For example:-a person might buy skinny jeans in hopes of losing weight and then fitting into them as a reward. That situation mostly never arises rendering the jeans to be nothing short of useless clutter.
