Chapter 1: What is Clutter?
H e who hoards much loses much.
-Lao Tzu
Clutter is anything we dont need, want, or use that takes our time, energy or space; anything you have accumulated that is an excess to your needs; stuff that not only fills drawers, shelves, cupboards, boxes and garages but also fills your head and weighs heavily on your heart.
Clutter can be something that served us at one time, but no longer serves us today. Something we have held on to thinking that we may need it again. Clutter not only takes up space and weight physically, it can weigh you down psychologically as well. Occasionally, clutter gets in our way every day, but we ignore it because dealing with it seems overwhelming. Other times clutter is something thats tucked away in our closet (or in the back of our mind), silently weighing on us and taking up space that could be used for something else.
Fact is that anything you own takes a space emotional, mental and physical space. Everything that you have requires your attention. For example, your car requires regular maintenance, your clothes require cleaning & ironing, and so on.
So, the more things you own that you dont necessarily need, the more you add to your clutter luggage physically, mentally and emotionally. It can slow you down or even prevent you from moving forward in your life.
Examples of Clutter:
-piles of paper
-unopened and unprocessed mail
-obsolete documents and records
-stored boxes of stuff
-unused items
-outgrown clothes
-broken things waiting to be repaired
-boxes of unused toys
-disliked gifts
The list goes on and on...
Why do We Need to Declutter?
L IVING IN A HOUSE THAT is full of clutter can be very stressful. Take a quick look around. See lots of clutter? Consider it a sign. Clutter-filled home is not only a symptom of stress but also a source of stress. Instead of your home being a refuge from the stress of work, it may add to your stress level. Its a terrible feeling when your home is more stressful than your workplace.
A LL THIS CLUTTER DID not come into your house in one day. You produce clutter through time. So dont expect to clear it all in one day. You are not superman. But the good news is clutter can be controlled.
