THE REAL ISSUES BEHIND HOME CLUTTER
No matter how many episodes of Hoarders you haveseen, you still should not consider yourself a bad person if your home isfilled with clutter. Clutter can accumulate in many ways: through laziness, neglect, a busy schedule that does not allow for regular cleaning, not enoughspace for the people living in the home, any number of reasons.
Yet, one truth that comes through on Hoarders andshould give you pause is this: mental illness is usually behind every personthat has so much stuff that they cannot move in their own home.
We trust that your home is not that bad at thispoint. If it is, you will need professional help in several areas, includingthe psychological realm. Nevertheless, even if you do not qualify as having amental illness, there can be several psychological factors involved in yourhome clutter, which shouldnt surprise you or discourage you.
Here are a couple of issues behind home clutter, oneor more of which might be true of you:
Yourhomes interior reached a point where you could no longer keep up with theclutter and you waved the figurative white flag. No one has gotten hurt sinceyou surrendered; no bills have been unpaid, so you have simply accepted defeatin regards to your clutter. You will need to have a steely resolve to be ableto apply the advice given in this e-book. You will have to take a deep breathand say to the world that you are not going to give up. Rather, you are goingto do battle with your clutter and win, one small step at a time.
Youhave clutter because you have been trying to keep up with the Joneses in yourlife. You joke about being a shopaholic, but the deeper issue is far moreserious. Many people who have too much stuff also live beyond their means. Youmight be deep in debt and knee-deep in junk because you have believed (wrongly)that the person with the most stuff wins in life. Its true that making a goodincome can lead to a higher quality of life, but it is also true that materialthings have never made anyone deeply happy. You might need to swear offmaterialism as your guiding philosophy of life before you can de-clutter yourhome. Until you stop bringing more stuff into your limited amount of space, youwill have a very difficult time winning the battle against clutter.
Youwant to win the fight against a house stocked in junk, but others in yourhousehold are not on board. We can find ourselves in many different livingsituationsthe traditional family with a spouse and children, having one ormore roommates, having a family added to other relatives in the house, etc. Youwill probably be unable to win the war on clutter alone. You are going to needto engage your housemates in the fight as well. Perhaps you have led a simplelifestyle to this point, but are overwhelmed by the additional stuff that yourhousemates bring into your living quarters. This can be the reason why you haveexcessive clutter as well.
Youhave an irrational fear that you will need something that you are tempted todiscard. This is a very common mind-set and does not indicate extremepsychological imbalance. At the same time, it needs to be recognized as anunwise attitude. A variation of this perspective can be found in the people whobuy back-up goods in case the tool or fan or other appliance fails to continueto work or gets lost. If you have adopted this practice, you get points forpreparation but a zero for realism and organization, two areas that you seek tobe strong in if you are reading this e-book.
Finally, another hang-up that small-time hoarders have is hanging on to any item thathas sentimental value. If this condition is probed deeply, it will reveal aperson that has an unhealthy attachment to the past. By discarding some ofthese items, you might find that you are able to release the past in a healthymanner and focus on the present and future. This, of course, does not mean thatyou cant keep many sentimental items aroundphotos, baby clothes, etc.but itdoes mean that you need to restrict their number and package and store themneatly. Just having an impromptu museum in your life is not a healthy outlook.
Again, it is a waste of mental energy to feel guiltyabout having too many things and becoming increasingly buried under a mound ofmaterial possessions. Your mental energy is better spent making a plan tode-clutter your home.
This e-book will not take the time to put you on aguilt trip. Rather, it will seek to give you concrete steps that you can taketo de-clutter your home, including many that involve the mind-set that you needto have.
In addition, this e-book will instruct you on how tokeep your home de-cluttered, which can be quite a challenge after an initialvictory of cleaning and discarding. The contents will also advise you aboutmistakes to avoid as you de-clutter, along with some final words of wisdom tohelp you on the journey.
We start with positive motivation to help you getoff your backside and into the game. Lets take a look at the many greatreasons why you should embark on de-cluttering your home.
