Introduction
W hen was the last time you looked around your house and thought it looked really organized? Maybe, more realistically, when was the last time you looked around and thought this looks all right? If youre like most of us then its probably been quite a while. Youve probably looked around your house lately and thought how did it get this bad? Dont worry. Youre just like a lot of well-meaning but time-constrained people.
Youve been out having a good time and enjoying your life. Youve probably been working. Maybe youre raising a family. So when it came to keeping your house organized ... well, other things got in the way. But the truth of the matter is that you can have an organized home and still get to do all of those other things that are more important to you. It doesnt take much.
This book is all about how you can get your home organized faster than you might think and how you can keep it looking great right from the start. Its going to look great and you wont even have to give up the things you really love in order to do it.
Chapter One: Start From the Top
I ts important to understand what it really means to be organized before you even begin. You need to understand that the organization is not necessarily going to be easy. If you were always an organized person before you might not have too much trouble. If youre not organized, like a lot of us, then you might not be so lucky. But throughout the next few chapters were going to give you some basic steps for organization and how you can get the process to work right for you.
In this chapter, you will learn:
- What is Organization?
- Why do I Want to Be Organized?
- How Can I Even Get Started?
What is Organization?
O rganization means that the things you own have a place where they belong. Now I know what youre probably thinking. Youre thinking, theres no way that I want to take all that time to put every little thing I own in a special spot. And then I have to put all that work into keeping it that way? Do you know my kids? Do you know my spouse?
The truth is that you are going to find a place for everything you own but its actually going to be a lot easier than you think. Thats because, a lot of your stuff really isnt necessary at all. This means that youre going to go through everything you own before you even get started trying to organize it all.
Organization means that you keep things where they should be, such as kids toys in your childrens rooms or in a playroom. Books should be on a bookshelf (unless youre in the process of reading it of course). Your financial papers should be stored in an office area. All of these things are very simple and they make sense right? All right I know you really dont want to agree but deep down you do. It makes sense to keep things in the places that they belong.
Why do I Want to Be Organized?
S o now that you know what organization is youre probably wondering why you even want to do it. After all, who wants to spend time and energy when your family isnt even going to stick with it? Heck, youre not even sure that you can stick with it right? Well you can, and so can they. The point is to make sure you get organized first and then well help you with the staying process (we have a whole chapter about it later on).
You want to get organized because it will make your entire life easier. Yep, thats the truth of the matter. If all of the things you have belonged somewhere and you knew where that somewhere was, youd be able to keep your house looking nicer. If you could keep your house looking nicer youd be able to invite people over more and if you could invite people over more youd be having a lot more fun with your life.
See how that balloons out for you there? It all starts with getting your house looking even better than ever. Youll be able to start feeling better about how your home looks and, in turn, youll feel better about people coming over to your house for cookouts, dinner parties or even just watching your favorite TV show. Youll have more fun because youre able to spend even more time with the people who are important to you.
If youre the type of person who invites everyone over anyway then kudos to you. Youre braver than a lot of us who want to make sure our house looks perfect before anyone sees it. But even if youre comfortable with people seeing your house the way it looks now, wouldnt you love for them to see your house at its best? Come on, deep down, who doesnt want to show off at least a little? When your house is organized properly youll be able to do that.
How Can I Get Started?
A ll right, so now youve reluctantly decided that you really do want to organize your home. You really want to get to that place where you can show off to everyone you know and you can invite them over more often. So how can you even get started on this process?
Well, to be honest, its not going to be an extremely easy process. Youre going to have to put some work into it. And no doubt you will, at some point, start to wonder why youre even doing it. But when you stick with it and you keep going its going to be a great feeling. Youll be glad when you can walk through your house and really see the difference that has been made.
Consider this as you get started. Thats what were going to talk about in the next chapter after all, what you need to do first.
Chapter Two: A Place for Everything
Y ou may want to start with the room that has the least in it already. From there youll build your way up to a bigger or more complicated room. After all, its going to be difficult enough trying to keep yourself on task without making it hard to begin with.
So what does this mean? Look around your house and take stock of just how cluttered each room is. Does your bathroom have the least clutter? For most people this will be the best place to start but it may not be for you. Try to determine which room is going to have the least amount of stuff that you need to go through. If it helps you can even rank the rooms in your house. Once youve done this youre going to know the room that you want to start in.
Of course, if you really want to jump in with both feet you can start with the room that will make the most impact or whichever one you want. The reason we typically tell you to start with an easy room is so you dont get discouraged. Think about it, when you first start out youre more likely to get discouraged more quickly.
If you start with a room thats going to be easy and take the least time you can get it done before you reach that point. By building up to harder rooms youre doing yourself a favor. Youre helping yourself to build into the organizational mindset by only gradually getting to a point where you need to spend more time and effort. By the time you get to those hard rooms youre committed and you want to see it through.
