Introduction:
Notes for Parents and Teachers

Welcome to the second in our series of Minecraft Lab books. We are thrilled that youve chosen to add our latest book to your library. The overall theme of this book is connecting STEMconcepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathwith Minecraft play. If youve read our first book, Unofficial Minecraft Lab for Kids, the format will be familiar. There are six themed quests, each of which presents four labs. Each of the labs has two parts: an out-of-game/family activity that requires hands-on exploration; and an in-game building and crafting activity.

Since Unofficial Minecraft Lab for Kids was published, weve learned that there are lots of folks just like us, looking to incorporate their kids interests into family activities. Minecraft has become an invaluable way for families all over the world to play together constructively.

More than ever, parents and teachers are looking for unique and engaging ways to connect a childs interests with learning objectives. Using the quests and labs, weve found that Minecraft is one of the best ways to connect those objectives with kids innate curiosity. While many games are focused on beating a score or another team, Minecrafts open-ended nature encourages and enhances teamwork. According to feedback and examples weve received from our readers, both kids and parents have loved working through the labs in our first book.

WHY STEM?

STEM is much more than in-school assignments and labs. Its about being curious and asking questions. Ultimately, STEM is about testing ideas, thinking about real-world problems, and developing solutions that improve lives and advance the world. What STEM education for elementary and middle-school kids typically lacks is a pathway to real-world problems. Minecraft can serve as an access point.

Minecraft offers a perfect blend of urgency and abundance within an immersive world that pulls players deeper into the game. Players can quickly build solutions to problems, tear down, and rebuild.

With a computer or smartphone and an internet connection, its easier than ever to find immediate answers to questions. But what about the questions that cant be answered or that havent been asked? For those, we need individual thinking, creativity, and minds that are free to explore the possibilities.

Through the labs in Unofficial Minecraft STEM Lab for Kids, which connect real life with in-game play and encourage Minecraft players to ask themselves why they designed, built, or changed something, new possibilities in Minecraft can be discovered.

SKETCHNOTING: INCORPORATING VISUAL THINKING

Throughout this book, players are encouraged to keep a science field journal in which they keep track of their findings, recording everything they observe and collect, much as a scientist working in the field would. By journaling their observations, your players will be able to keep track of their findings. When scientists jot down all their observations, they free space in their brains working memory to focus on other areas during their research. Not all observations have clear connections while journaling, which is why scientists jot down as much as possible.

We offer some examples of field journal entries below and on the opposite page to inspire your players, who can either follow our examples or make up their own. Note that ours are a mix of writing and drawing often called sketchnoting or visual journaling. By combining visuals with text, we find its easier to jot down ideas more quickly.

Most field journals typically include the time of day, weather, location, plants and/or animals observed, soil, measurements, etc. Our sketchnotes also include drawings, diagrams, and questionslots of questions.

Here are a few basic guidelines to share with your player:

Just jot down ideas. Dont worry about how they look. No one is grading this work. The journal is only for your players own scientific experiments.

Highlight important items by making them darker or bolder with a pencil, pen, or marker.

Doodle, add your personality, and have fun!

GAME MECHANICS FOR PARENTS
What Is Minecraft?

When players enter a newly created Minecraft world, they often experience a sense of awe and wonder as they move through a place that has been uniquely generated just for them. They find themselves walking through a jungle or across a deserted beach or scaling a tall mountain to get a better view. They might encounter a vast sandy desert or a deep red and brown mesa. Through their travels, they may see wild horses, cute little rabbits, or other exotic beasts as each day passes.

At its core, Minecraft is a simple game. A novice can get a general feel in minutes for how the game is played, despite the fact that no instructions come with it. You can play by yourself or with others, and the game can be played across multiple devices, from computers to smartphones and tablets to gaming consoles.
