Notes for Parents Caregivers Educators and Players In Unofficial Minecraft - photo 3
Notes for Parents, Caregivers, Educators, and Players

In Unofficial Minecraft Life Hacks Lab for Kids, the third Unofficial Minecraft title in the Lab for Kids series, we show you how Minecraft can be used in creative ways to develop the essential life hacks needed to play positively and craft the core blocks of emotional intelligence. We also share some fun and interesting project ideas that use these skills, enabling you to be a better player and create a better worldboth in real life and in Minecraft.

What Does That Have to Do with Me?: A Note for Players

What is emotional intelligence and what has it got to do with me? Emotional intelligence is the core building block of being human. To develop emotional intelligence, we have to get better at knowing how we feel, how others feel, and how we make a difference in each others lives and in the world around us. We call these skills life hacks because they help you stay safe, stay smart, and create the world you want to live and play in.

Using fun activities, in Minecraft and out of game, we show you how Minecraft can be used to build these skills, mine positive connections, and make great choices as people and players. You can either work through sequentially or you can bounce from one lab to another. Most labs suggest doing the out-of-game activity first as a way to research and prepare for the in-game building. Flip through the labs to get a feel for the flow of the book.

A Note for Parents, Caregivers, and Educators

As parents and educators, ourselves, we know how difficult it can feel when it seems your child or student is interested only in playing Minecraft. Why dont they just go outside or read a book? Should they be online so much? Are they addicted? What about socializing? What if they dont make any real friends? What about bad behavior online? What if they dont develop the skills they need to get on in the world?

Do any of these questions ring a bell? Maybe youve said them yourself, or maybe youve had them said to you. These are all real questions that weve been asked in the course of our work as Minecraft artists and educators, and theyre all questions we have asked ourselves as parents. This book draws on our shared experience from both sides of that fence.

Through in-game and hands-on projects, Unofficial Minecraft Life Hacks Lab for Kids shows players how to develop the building blocks of positive communication, listening skills, leadership and collaboration traits, emotional empathy, self-confidence, and self-control, with fun and practical ideas for how these skills can be used to play positively and forge better connections at home and in the wider community.

Key Tools of a Life Hacker

If you want to be a life hacker, youll need the following methods and tools.

Noodling: Notes from the Adventure

Noodling, or wandering around, is an important part of the creative process and an important space for discovering more about your ideas and how you feel about things.

Even though we produce major projects within Minecraft, we always start at the kitchen table, using pens, large sheets of paper, and sticky notes. This is where we tackle challenges and discover creative solutions. This way, we make sure that our ideas arent restricted at this important creative stage.

Once weve mapped out our initial thoughts, we move on to a Minecraft sketchbook world, where we can try out ideas without worrying about the finished product.

We also keep personal journals, where we reflect on our process. We use this safe space to focus on the issues and how we feel about our work. This helps us to collaborate positively and confidently.

Weve given some examples starting shown from our own noodling process. Youll have your own way of noodling, and we encourage you to make this a daily ingredient of your life hacks process.

Take photos: Notice shapes, colors, reflections, textures, shadows. Look at the familiar in an unfamiliar way. Change your perspective: go for an insects point of view, a birds-eye view, or turn your world upside down.
