Chapter One
Dentistry on the Same Day? Whats That All About?
I want to talk about two things: disruption and dentistry.
When you talk about disruption, dentistry probably isnt the next word that comes to mind. But I want to get us started off on the same level, and on that level, were thinking a little differently.
Were thinking about how to make change, and for the better. Were thinking about problems that need solutions. Were thinking about throwing out the playbook and starting from scratch.
More important most importanthere on this wavelength, were thinking about being true to ourselves. For me, a dentist with decades of experience in traditional dental practices, being true to myself meant bringing a little of that disruption into dentistry. It meant starting the Same Day Dentistry revolution.
You might have been practicing the traditional model of dentistry for years too, owning your own practice and trying to make ends meet by keeping a rotating roster of ever-complicated procedures. Or, you might be a junior dentist, just starting out in your field and trying to scrape together a living working for different corporate dental centers throughout the week, worrying about paying off your school debt and supporting a young family. Or you might be a patient, frustrated by having to come back for procedure after procedure until youve crossed everything off your expensive treatment plan.
Make no mistake: I have no quarrel with the traditional way of doing things. And the way that I run my practice isnt for everyone, either. Theres a time and a place for each type of treatment. But I wrote this book because the time might be right for a little revolution in your life too.
What We Do
Its as simple as it sounds: the Same Day Dentistry revolution is about performing dental procedures on the same day. Efficiently solving problems, being a dependable and trusted presence in patients lives, helping them to get out of pain and move on with their day: thats what has driven me as a dentist for more than thirty-five years, and thats what we aim to do in a Same Day Dentistry practice.
Lets walk through it with a patient. Well call him John. John has wandered in to my practice largely because hes seen our sign out front (were located in a central strip mall, not a place youd expect to find a dental practice, but well get to that later) and hes heard of us through positive word of mouth or social media. Hes busy, hes scared, and hes in a lot of pain. The first thing I do is sit down with him for a one-on-one conversation; I gather his patient history, but more important, I listen for the type of experiences that hes had walking into dental practices before.
I can tell that John is feeling a little guilty and embarrassed. Hes never particularly liked going to the dentist, he admits, and so that makes it hard for him to prioritize his dental care. I cant hold that against him; its an intimidating prospect, letting a stranger poke around in your mouth with all those sharp implements! Hes typically ignored problems in his mouth before, hoping they would go away.
I have bad teeth, he explains, like its something that is his fault, and then goes on to tell me about the last time he visited a dentist, two years ago.
He had a nagging toothache, one that he worried was the result of a cavity or an infection. He found a dentist on his insurance plan and went in for a consultation, hoping to get the problem addressed. He received a cursory exam and X-rays for a hefty out-of-pocket fee, and a treatment plan with an intimidating (and costly) list of issues to address.
I have bad teeth, he says again.
Because he hadnt had the money that day for the entire treatment plan, hed felt it wasnt worth starting down that road. Hed had a toothache that day , but he had walked out of that office with nothing but a hole in his bank account from the examination fees.
My first aim was to make sure that this didnt happen to John again. I knew that in the intervening years, some problems may have gotten worseand some new decay had probably popped up. But I wanted to make sure that, no matter what, John would walk away with some sort of a solution today.
