Introduction
In the professional world, Ive heard a goal should be set for two of the following: books and children. I think Im thereand then some! Of course, even with my heavy travel schedule these days, managing to compile the topics for this dental edition of the Five-Minute Veterinary Consult did not place an undue burden on me. To begin with, I dont think my teenage daughter minded not seeing much of me during that time! Also, the efforts of my contributors, and the existence of many solid topics from previous editions literally had me standing on the shoulders of giants. One of those giants I would like to thank in particular: Dr. Robert Wiggsmy former and continuing mentor whose contributions will always be valued, in addition to many excellent images he was able to share. I also would like to thank Dr. Jan Bellows, the original 5 Minute Veterinary Consult dental section editor, for starting the process in previous editions. And of course, in addition to thanking my family for putting up with me, I would also like to thank Pfizer Animal Health and my colleagues for their continued support of veterinary dentistry and my efforts.
In veterinary medicine, dentistry remains one of the most practical, impact ful areas for patient health, yet our efforts at education are still challenging. Most practitioners learn many of their dental skills in their day-to-day practice, so having realistic, relevant resources to guide them in their work is paramount. The effort of this text is to expand the topic discussion of common problems encountered to include basic information on diagnostics and procedures. Great effort has been made to provide step-by-step coverage with extensive photos and images of these skills that can be used on a daily basis to enhance your dental offerings. My goal is to make this book so useful that there will be many dog-ears and page markers because it is taken off the shelf on a regular basis for ongoing learning. From this point, there are other texts that deal with more advanced dental techniques and concepts, but this one will be the workhorse of a typical practice. Just use it!
