ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
T his book had considerable assistance from family and friends. The authors sister, Jayne Olsen, has been instrumental in her role as the key family genealogist. Barbara Hay has been a family history leader in the Coates-Coleman field which led to exampled realities noted in the present text. Special thanks for assistance with proofreading go to my daughter, Penny Zipfel, and to Gaynor Haliday for her thorough, and especially professional, editing and proofreading.
My son, Kit McConnell, has fostered a strong sense of historical time and place which is reflected in various parts of the text. Maya and Cleo Zipfel have the authors warm regard for their suggestions and ability to recount family history that set the scene for real-life elements of inclusion. Compiling the Cornes/Waite family tree with Lorraine Beven provided tests of the texts practicality. Judi Brennans grandchildren, Sophia and Harry Blewett, led to further considerations of what young children should learn about their family history lineage. Special thanks to Sophia and Toby McConnell for their theme photograph.
INTRODUCTION
T his book is different from family history books that assume research will be carried out only by adults. It has twin goals of generating family history interests with all ages of present family members and providing practical guidelines for them on how researching family history can become an exciting whole-family enterprise. Thoughtful parents, and thoughtful genealogists working with families, can initiate a research adventure rather than an imposition leading to young family members exhibiting boredom, disinterest or even resistance. Each family member, as part of the family team, can be involved in researching their past family history and generate, for future generations, a picture of their present family history. When we know our familys history more completely, we then know ourselves more completely.
It is comparatively difficult for family leaders to locate satisfactory books providing practical advice on family members of all ages being involved in family history research. It is rare to find writing on family history with guidance for all members of a present-day family presenting their lives of today as part of the familys future. True researchers intuit that when you research for your self you research for other selfs.
