How could a smarter grocery cart make life easier for your parents? Great inventors use a process called design thinking to help them identify problems, big and small, and create solutions for them. This book introduces readers to design thinking and asks them to look at grocery carts at their local stores (the pros and cons of them) in a specific way to figure out how to improve it. Design thinking fosters innovation, creativity, and even empathy--essential learning for students. CHAPTER ONE
Design Thinking and
Identifying a Problem
Have you ever tried to walk down a crowded hallway and thought there
has to be a better way to get through the school? Have you ever held a tool
in your hand and realized it doesnt feel or work the way you want it to?
Have you ever wished that somebody would figure out an easier method to
clean or even redecorate your room? If so, you may be an inventor.
Whenever a product or system doesnt work as well as it could, it has a
design problem . An inventor finds these design problems and improves
the design or creates brand-new things that solve problems.
To be a successful inventor, you need to solve problems for many
people, not just yourself. One new idea might make life easier for the whole
world. Lots of great inventors use a process called design thinking to help
them identify problems, big and small, and create solutions for them.
Design thinking is a specific way of looking at products and problems to
help figure out how to improve them. The design firm IDEO made design
thinking famous, and one of its first projects was to reinvent the shopping
cart. Now its your turn to design a better shopping cart by using design
thinking.
Design thinking is a unique way of looking at a design problem by taking
user behaviors and preferences into account.
What is great about a grocery cart? What is not so great? These questions
can help you discover a topic to study.
Quite often, we use the same thing for so long that we get used to it.
We might not realize how much more helpful it could be, and we might
overlook some of the problems it has. We have just come to accept it.
Sometimes it takes a design thinker to provide a fresh look at these
everyday items and reevaluate them.
Every day, millions of Americans useand may be annoyed by
grocery carts. This book is going to help you use design thinking to
explore the possibilities of improving this familiar invention.
Try This
Think about the last time you or your family used a shopping
cart. Draw a picture of the cart with all its partswheels,
lower level, main basket, upper basket/child seat, and
handle. Imagine filling it with all the things you buy. Dont
forget about big, heavy items and small or fragile items
that get smooshed. What is helpful about the carts design,
structure, wheel size, handle, and more? What could be
better? On your drawing, list and point out the design
problems. This list will help you in .
CHAPTER TWO
Research, Observe,
and Interview
Now that we know some possible problems with shopping carts, its
time to gather information. You will use three techniques: research,
observation , and interviewing. As you work through these steps, take
notes. Design thinkers take tons of notes. You dont have to worry about
writing complete sentences or using correct spelling. Find a notebook or
scratch paper, and write down good ideas as they come to you.
Research
Online research can help you find different kinds of shopping carts
that already exist. By doing a Google Images search for shopping cart,
you will get all sorts of different results. You may need to refine your
search to just get the types of carts found in supermarkets and not
information about online carts from shopping websites. Try keywords like
new or innovative to find images of unusual types of carts. Take notes
and make doodles to document any unique design features that you find
during your research.
When you notice designs that are different from normal shopping
carts, try to figure out why those changes were made. For example, maybe
Refining your Google search means you will find images that are more
specific to what you are looking for.
bigger wheels were used to make it easier to push through snow in
northern areas. City grocery stores may have narrow aisles, meaning they
need smaller carts or handheld baskets . Some carts might have unique
features for keeping fragile items from getting smooshed!
Observe
Field trip! Visit a local grocery store or supermarket. Your job is to
watch people use the carts and take lots of notes. Notice how different
shoppers use shopping carts in different ways.
Do people shopping alone use carts the same way as a parent with
kids? Do senior citizens use the cart differently than younger shoppers? Do
the things people buy change the way they use the carts? Does a shopper
who buys a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables use the cart the same way as
someone buying a bunch of canned food, dog food, or cleaning supplies?
Dont forget to observe the store workers. How are they using the carts?
Do they struggle to get them back in the store? Are there carts lost in the
parking lot? Are they rolling around and causing damage to parked cars?
Are the shopping carts in good condition or banged up?
Interview
Grocery shoppers and store workers are the experts when it comes to
shopping carts. You probably know lots of these experts. Use your notes
and observations to come up with a few questions. Then ask your friends
and relatives for their opinions about shopping carts. Based on your own
thoughts so far, your questions might look something like these:
Watch for the different ways that families and individuals use their
grocery carts.
What do you like about the shopping cart? What works well?
