What Is a FORCE?

A force makes something move. You cannot see a force, but you can see and feel its effects .

Pushes and pulls are two different types of forces.

This is a push.

This is a pull.

How Do You PUSH and PULL?

You use your body to push things away from you. You usually push things to make them move forward.

You can push shopping carts in a supermarket.

You can also use your body to pull objects toward you.

Each team is pulling the

rope toward them.

Natural FORCES

There are natural forces that can push and pull, too. Wind is a natural force.

Wind is moving air. You can see its effect as it pushes through the trees.

Changing SHAPE

Push and pull forces can change the shape of things by squashing, stretching, or bending them.

You can push or pull soft clay to make many different shapes.

.

Changing DIRECTION

Pushes and pulls can change the direction of a moving object.

Soccer players use their feet to push a soccer ball. They can push the ball in different directions.

Changing SPEED

Pushes and pulls can make an object move faster or slower. The harder an object is pushed, the faster and farther it will travel.

Pulling can slow down an object that is moving in the opposite direction.
