What Is a Plant?

A plant is a living thing. All living things need water, air, and sunlight to live.

There are many different kinds of plants. Most plants have roots, leaves, flowers, and a stem.

Plants live all around the world!

What Are Roots?

Roots are the part of a plant that typically grow downward into the soil .

Some plants dont have any roots!

Roots are very important. They absorb water and

nutrients from the soil that the plant can use.

What Do Roots Look Like?

Roots come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. They typically grow underground, which makes them difficult to see.

Some roots are very big, but others are much smaller.

Many trees have shallow roots that can be seen if the soil around them moves in any way.

How Do Roots Grow?

When a seed has enough water and energy from the sun, it will grow a root.

As a plant grows, it keeps growing more roots.

Other types of plants grow roots above the ground.

Roots from an orchid grow upward as they absorb water from the air.

Mistletoe grows on trees. Its roots break into a trees bark and share the trees nutrients.

What Do Roots Do?

Roots that grow downward into the soil absorb water and nutrients.

The water and nutrients move up the plants stem and into the leaves.
