INTRODUCTION
P it Bulls have given wonderful years of special companionship to many owners, so a decision to bring a new Pit Bull into your family as a pet can be one of the best decisions you can made. From infancy to maturity, Pit Bulls develop a unique bond with their owners. And because of their obscured status in society, as the owner you will see things in your friend like kindness, companionship and silliness that others will not see. But for this bond to strengthen, a few procedures will have to be established within your home, based on obedience. Training your Pit Bull throughout its life will lead to proper integration and interactions with your family members and friends.
This book is a needed resource in making sure your Pit Bull is adequately trained and listens to the requests that you ask of it. Inside you will find answers to many questions you will have about the process of training your Pit Bull, how to get started, and what to do if you run into a roadblock. Through this work, the authors wish is that you understand the psychology of your Pit Bull and how their mind functions during the learning process. By understanding this simple training process you will hopefully be more appreciative of the complicated learning processes going on. And this knowledge will make it easier for you to adjust to unexpected scenarios and to teach your dog differences in desired and undesired behaviors.
With this inside out insight into dog training that other resources scarcely offer - the causal factors producing behaviors - you are sure to make greater strides in progress when it is time to train your Pit Bull. The top-down approach described within covers all aspects of their behavior and is applicable to virtually every scenario you will encounter as an owner. Enjoy the process of training your Pit Bull, as it is a very rewarding experience the first time he or she responds to a command. And with this book to help you, the hope is that you will be a proud owner of a gentle, well-behaved companion for years.
CHAPTER 1 PIT BULL - THE MALIGNED BREED
P ity the poor Pit Bull owner whose puppy is so often maligned by the narrow-minded public. The owner, seeing a warm, loving companion with a heart of gold, often views their dog through a lens much different than the outsider.
Pit Bulls live with an unfortunate monkey on their back - they have the unfortunate stigma of a bad reputation. The general public fears the Pit Bull because of the not infrequent, sometimes misguided media reports of a dog attack by a Pit Bull. Because of these media reports, Pit Bulls are seen as a risky breed for a family to own, especially since they have a reputation of attacking children. This reputation could not be further from the truth. Pit Bulls are as sweet, loving and friendly as any other breed. So why should they be the only breed to carry such a tarnished reputation in the entire dog kingdom?
No doubt during your ownership of your Pit Bull you have (or will) hear stories from friends about how they knew a guy who was viciously bitten by a neighbors Pit Bull, or something of the sort. These word of mouth claims of attacks are damaging to the reputation of Pit Bulls everywhere because they impact us on a personal level. If your friend knows someone who was fiercely attacked for no reason, what is to stop a Pit Bull from attacking me?
The problem with these stories is that they often lack the complete details or are changed to leave out some relevant information. If a person was trespassing on a neighbors yard and was bitten, or was provoking the dog by teasing him or purposely frustrating him, then it is understandable that the Pit Bull defended his territory, especially if his owner had trained him to do so. In addition, omissions in stories travel through the grapevine and are constantly modified and twisted every time they are retold, and can be as dramatic as turning a simple nip of a teasing mans hand, into a crushing chomp of an innocent arm.
Stories like this are not to be taken at face value, but our willingness to accept everything as fact gets in the way of us learning the truth. And the truth is that attacks by Pit Bulls rarely happen - this is a claim highly exaggerated. The rate of Pit Bull attacks is, in fact, not only consistent with those of other breeds, but also actually lower than many of you might have supposed. The likelihood of being attacked by a raging Pit Bull is actually pretty miniscule. Smaller even, than being struck by lightning.
The evidence to refute the claims of frequent, viscous Pit Bull attacks is readily available, but the public refuses to acknowledge it because they already have their preconceived notion of the breed as a bunch of problem dogs. Every year the American Temperament Test society compiles a list of attacks by dogs of all breeds. A fact that is continually ignored by the American public is that Pit Bulls almost never make it even into the top 5 in their surveys of most severe and frequent dog bites for a given year. Breeds that are commonly placed above the Pit Bull in number of attacks and severity of the bite include Dalmatians, Dobermans, Rottweiler, Chows, Labs, Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels. Moreover, when a specific case study was done in Palm Beach County, Florida, the domestic pet that was recorded as having causing the largest total of severe bites was the Domestic Short Haired Cat ! Delving deeper into the study it was found that an individuals chances of actually being attacked by a Pit Bull was 1 in 145,000,000. That is 145 million , and to gain a little perspective that means you are 240 times more likely to get struck by lightning than attacked by your neighbors Pit Bull.
Chances are, you have been worried about the wrong dangers for most of your life, so here is a quick list of things with higher chances of injuring you than being mauled by a Pit Bull:
A s a Pit Bull owner, you can help restore your pets reputation by citing that one is more likely to be injured in any of the above accidents than by being attacked by a Pit Bull. Armed with the same knowledge you have, hopefully more people can learn to love the adorable lot of Pit Bull as much as you do.
The media exacerbates the already bad Pit Bull reputation. While attacks do not happen often, accidents do happen. Local news networks love to spin these stories into side stories about how awful the breed is and how bad a little girls injury is after she was bitten by a Pit Bull. The story of Michael Vick and his dog-fighting ring was a perfect example of this. So much of the news coverage was turned to how aggressive these dogs had become, and how they were now unfit to be able to find owners because of their terrible demeanor. This was a horribly bad blow to owners of Pit Bulls across America, and to the already poor reputation that Pit Bulls have. It is a shame that the actions of one individual can have such an impact on the opinions and prejudices of so many people.
