    Cosmos DB is a NoSQL database service included in Azure that is continuously adding new features and has quickly become one of the most innovative services found in Azure, targeting mission-critical applications at a global scale. This book starts off by showing you the main features of Cosmos DB, their supported NoSQL data models and the foundations of its scalable and distributed architecture. You will learn to work with the latest available tools that simplify your tasks with Cosmos DB and reduce development costs, such as the Data Explorer in the Azure portal, Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer, and the Cosmos DB Emulator.

    Next, move on to working with databases and document collections. We will use the tools to run schema agnostic queries against collections with the Cosmos DB SQL dialect and understand their results. Then, we will create a first version of an application that uses the latest .NET Core SDK to interact with Cosmos DB. Next, we will create a second version of the application that will take advantage of important features that the combination of C# and the .NET Core SDK provides, such as POCOs and LINQ queries. By the end of the book, you will be able to build an application that works with a Cosmos DB NoSQL document database with C#, the .NET Core SDK, LINQ, and JSON.

    Gastn C. Hillar is Italian and has been working with computers since he was 8 years old. Gaston has a bachelor's degree in computer science (graduated with honors) and an MBA. He is an independent consultant, a freelance author, and a speaker.

    He was a senior contributing editor at Dr. Dobb's Journal and has written more than a hundred articles on software development topics. He has received the prestigious Intel Black Belt Software Developer award eight times.

    He lives with his wife, Vanesa, and his two sons, Kevin and Brandon.

    Preface

    This book shows you how to develop applications that work with Azure Cosmos DB. Azure and other cloud applications typically work with massive amounts of data that can be organized in different ways. These applications will often require elastic scalability of storage and throughput, and will often need to work across new geographical regions. This is the problem that Microsoft's Azure Cosmos DB service addresses. It is a globally distributed, massively scalable, and multi-model NoSQL database service.

    You will learn how to use the Azure Cosmos DB Emulator. You will start by writing simple queries against Cosmos DB data and handling the responses, and then learn how to use more sophisticated querying constructs. You will create a full C# application that integrates with Cosmos DB, and learn about the .NET Core 2 classes that are needed to do so. You will work with LINQ and POCOs to cement your querying capabilities.

    Having mastered Cosmos DB's NoSQL capabilities by the end of this book, you will be able to build scalable, globally distributed, and highly responsive applications.
