ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

To begin at the beginning, I would like to thank my beloved mother, Yolande Munn, for her exceptional vocabulary and stellar mothering skills - in the reverse order of course. To my husband, Mark Darling, for having the best surname and for taking me away for our well-earned 25th wedding anniversary on a cruise from Venice to Singapore, travelling old style. The sea days on our verandah gave me the space and time to finish this book. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To my adored family: Harrison, Jonah, Linden, Isabel and Louis. Thank you for having faith in me and being quietly proud. Thank you to Michele Neil who saved my life, literally, almost four years ago (theres another book in that). And thank you to all the truly amazing and inspiring editors and teams who I have worked with as well as the incredible PRs and beauty companies who have been at my constant beck and call. And to all those practitioners who have laid hands on me and given me so much to write about as well as holding back the hands of time.

To Marion Hume for making it all happen by setting me on my beauty path when I was at Vogue and to the legendary Pat Ingram who continues to watch over and care for me in my current role as beauty director at Fairfax. A huge thank you to my wonderful agent at Curtis Brown, Grace Heifetz (and to Priscilla Nielsen who introduced me), who navigated me through the process with so much care and love and helped make me a published author with the awesome Penguin Random House. Thank you to Kirsten Abbott for believing in me in the first place and to Sarah Fairhall for sensitively editing my book and making it what it is today.

Thank you to my dear Sherine Youssef, who read my book as each chapter unfolded and was my appropriateness monitor. To Shona Martyn, who has been my lifelong mentor and friend since I was a puppy journalist in my first job at Vogue, thank you for always being there. And last but by no means least to the gorgeous beauty poss many of whom have become my much-loved friends.

FOREWORD

I FIRST WORKED WITH STEPHANIE IN JULY 2001 when she came on board as the beauty director at Harpers Bazaar at Australian Consolidated Press. I was publishing director at the time and we spent many happy hours gossiping about makeup and working on beauty ideas for the readers. When the launch of Madison was about to become a reality, the intrepid Stephanie came immediately to mind. I remember us meeting for a manicure before work one morning and my asking her if she would join the team. It was an enthusiastic Yes.

We kept in touch after I had left ACP and went to Fairfax Media, and when Madison, sadly, was closed, I asked Stephanie to take up the role of beauty director on Sunday Life. It was a contributor position but she insisted on working in the office every week. She loves involvement with the team and when she is not parading her latest shoe purchases she is regaling us with outlandish tales of extreme beauty procedures and her latest product obsessions. She now also works for our sister website Daily Life as their beauty director and contributes to Good Weekend.

We have been eagerly watching the progress of Secrets of a Beauty Queen. This book captures the intriguing world that is beauty, with must-have tips, lust-have products, behind-the-scenes peeks, and world travels, all woven together with her delightful sense of fun and humour, and shining with the passion she has for the industry she loves.

PAT INGRAM

Editorial Director of Sunday Life

D EAR READER, I hope you have had as much fun reading my book as I have had writing it. The creative process has brought back so many incredible memories and reignited my passion for beauty all over again. At the risk of repeating myself, I have the luckiest, most remarkable job in the world and I plan to be a beauty queen for as long as you will have me. Never fear, I will keep on searching for that perfect nude lipstick, seeking out signature scents and putting my body on the line to test drive the extremes of pleasure and pain.

INTRODUCTION

I HAVE REACHED THAT FUNNY AGE, 56 , where for the first time in my life I am beginning to feel just the tiniest bit invisible. Ive even started flirting with the possibility of a facelift, all in the name of science of course the ultimate road test.

Manicured hands down, I have the best job in the world. I think youll probably agree with me once Ive told you some of the incredible and outlandish things Ive done, all for the sake of beauty. I have worked on amazing magazines, including Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and now I have my very own column in the Sun-Heralds colour supplement, Sunday Life, as well as an online presence with Daily Life. When I sat down with the editorial director to discuss the format of my column, we conceived the road test, which basically meant me putting my body on the line to test all sorts of weird and wonderful treatments.

To date, I have done 170 road tests. If there is a beauty treatment out there, odds are Ive trialled it. They range from sublime facials and massages that have taken me to nirvana and back, to excruciating but highly effective treatments such as Ultherapy, to perfectly painted nails and toes (a pedicure really is a little slice of heaven), to having my hair coloured in Paris by the most famous colourist in the world. This, believe it or not, is my job.
