Taking the time to read these pages will make your work easier.
This chapter also includes information on using templates. Introduction to Paper Choosing the right paper depends on its intended use. The properties of different types of paper are crucial. One important consideration is paper thickness, which is given in grams per square meter (gsm). The thicker the paper, the more stable and stiff it is. The lighter or thinner the paper, the more flexible and delicate it is.
Thickness comes into play when paper is being folded, scored, or cut. Many papers are soft or textured in a way that makes it impossible to fold a line cleanly. Other papers are so thick or rigid that the surface rips or breaks when someone tries to fold it. Before choosing paper, always think about what makes the most sense for a particular project. Folding Paper For folding, choose between regular letter-size paper (100 gsm) or special square paper (65 gsm). Square paper is available in different sizes, including 12" x 12" (30 x 30 cm) and 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm).
Specialty papers, such as waterproof paper and flame-resistant paper, are appropriate for some objects. Theres also duo paper, which has a different color on each side. Photo Mounting Board, Construction Paper, and Card Stock These papers are appropriate for most papercrafts. Photo mounting board (300 gsm) is especially stable but very difficult to cut and fold. Card stock (220 gsm) is very flexible. Construction paper (139 gsm) is not very sturdy, but it folds well.
All these papers are available in different formats. Scrapbooking Paper Scrapbooking paper offers a world of different patterns and colors. The weight is 120 gsm, so its suitable for smaller projects or details. Its normally sold in 12" x 12" (30.5 x 30.5 cm) sheets. Transparent Paper Transparent paper is 115 gsm, and transparent board is 285 gsm. Transparent paper is very sturdy but still very sensitive.
It must be cut and folded very carefully and precisely. Glue dries more slowly on this type of paper. Finished Papers Some paper surfaces are finished by embossing or applying glitter or foil. These papers have very different properties and weights. They can be used for projects on a case-by-case basis.
