M iko Pattie and Bonnie Cox have put together a timely, informative look at the rapidly changing world of electronic resources and libraries. Libraries are struggling to come to terms with new methods of access and new forms of information which are changing even as procedures and workflows are being discussed. New methods of applying traditional principles in the context of these new technologies are explored in this thought provoking volume. This compilation will be of interest to librarians in all areas interested in taking advantage of new and developing technologies to connect the user information needed

REVIEWS, COMMENTARIES, EVALUATIONS
I n a succinct statement of intent, editors Miko Pattie and Bonnie Jean Cox clearly recognized that discussions on the selection and bibliographic control of electronic resources bear some resemblance to nailing Jell-O to a tree while simultaneously recognizing the urgency underlying the need that these conversations occur. To-ward that end, they have compiled an outstanding set of chapters from leaders in the field addressing conceptual and practical issues regarding electronic resources. The articles on the principles for selection and bibliographic control and the relationship between library online catalogs and the World Wide Web build a fundamental background for the following detailed examinations of ground breaking projects, including works in progress for creating access to electronic resources at the University of Virginia, Stanford University, North Carolina State University, library of Congress and OCI.C.
The impact of using standards and tools relatively new to the world of library cataloging, such as TEI, SGMI. and the Dublin Core, is described together with assessments of their potential for future use. The international arena is considered as well with desuiptions of innovative work in Australia and Scotland, the latter utilizing a subject tree approach for access to Internet-accessible resources.
Written for a general audience who are themselves grappling with these issues, the articles are uniformly well written and informative. While it is difficult to open a journal today without seeing mention of electronic resources, this volume should prove to be a resource for librarians and others on this topic for years to come. It is an excellent compendium of issues and progress to date in defining workable solutions which will be equally useful to practitioners seeking answers as well as researchers probing the historical record.
