Part 2: Construction
Wrapping it Up
I remember opening my grandmothers journal for the first time after she had passed. I had known her through life, but I had not known her well. This was my chance. Before she passed away, she told the family that her journals could be passed down. No one had quite known what to do with them, and so, they had come into my possession. As I sat there, with the journal on my lap, I wondered what secrets I would find. What insight would be contained in these books? What would I find out about her life?
In the end, it turned out that she was especially interested in the weather. Every day, without fail, the weather was recorded. If you are interested in the weather on a particular day in a town smack dab in the middle of nowhere, then, boy, do I have an information source for you. Other than the weather, there was not a lot to take in. Bus journeys were recorded. Trips to the grocery store. The most exciting thing which happened was a family reunion on a weekend in early June. Even then, the weather took center stage.
So, what did I get from these journals? The truth is, not much, other than a love for journaling. It was not the contents of the journal which peaked my interest; it was the possibilities contained within. Journals are about the past, present, and future, all rolled into one. Even reading about the weather had a certain fascination, just as writing about it must have held something special for my grandmother. Since then, I have had a love for journaling.
My journaling has evolved over time, and you will be glad to know that I keep my weather references to a minimum, though, just for her, I will occasionally make mention of the weather. I love to journal. If you know me, then I have probably shared that with you at some point. I believe that journaling is an effective way to change your life. That may sound like a strong statement, but, for me, it is true on a daily basis. Now, I am not saying that journaling is for everyone, but I kind of am.
Stay with me, and I will show you how journaling can make a positive impact on you and your life.
What is Journaling?
J ournaling is so many things to so many people. Whether it be detailing the facts of the day or recording your thoughts, there is no right or wrong way to journal (though, I will often tell people that my way is best). Journaling is a journey. It is a way to channel your life, feelings, and emotions. It is a center of reflection and self-expression. A journal is something personal and can only be completed by you.
When we slow down and take note of our life, we begin to see patterns and motivations. Sometimes it takes us stepping back to see the bigger picture in our own lives. It is like watching a child grow up (and lets face it, we are all children really). When you see them every day, you know they are growing, but you cannot see it. It is only when they are apart from you, that you notice the growth. Taking that step back can help us see what is right in front of our eyes.
Keeping a journal is an art form. Creating a journal is like creating a self-portrait. Your words, expressions, feelings, and reflections are the paintbrushes and paints which youll create your likeness with. Journaling, just like a self-portrait, is a form of self-expression. Just as art can help to explore your feelings and better your life, so can journaling. Journaling has been shown to help relieve stress, boost your confidence, create a healthier lifestyle, and help you to take control of your life.
What is Bullet Journaling?
Y ou may have heard of the term bullet journaling, or not, its not that popular yet. It is almost better if you havent heard of it, because then, at least, we can start from scratch. There are a lot of ideas as to what bullet journaling is, and while there is a lot of good information out there, there is also a lot of disinformation too.
When people talk about bullet journaling, you will often hear lots of buzzwords thrown around. As we move through what bullet journaling actually is, you will get to know what a lot of those buzzwords actually mean. However, the basic description of bullet journaling is that its the method of journaling and taking notes using bullet points. Basically, bullet journaling is using bullet points to journal and take notes.
Thats it! That is all there is to it. Bullet journaling is all about simplicity and organization. Some of them contain an index or a table of contents. Some contain future logs where you can see what the future holds, perhaps in the form of a calendar. There can be daily and monthly logs to track what needs to be done and what gets done. You can write in shorthand if you like or you can create your own symbols.
