WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE PAPER AIRPLANES
Years ago, when I was about ten, I found an amazing paper airplane book at the library. It was by Yasuaki Ninomiya, and it was filled with planes that were made with paper and scissors instead of just folding. They looked like planes, and they flew great. I made every plane in the book, and then tried designing my own. I even wrote to Dr. Ninomiya to trade designs, and he sent back a couple of his Japanese books.

My planes flew well enough, but I had a problem. The planes in the book had hooks for flying with a catapult, but my paper was too flimsy to stand up to the rigorous launches. How were they flown? I really struggled. Many years later, when I first moved to Japan, I got in touch with Dr. Ninomiya again, and he invited me to the park where he flew planes with his friends. When I got there, everyone was shooting their planes 40 or 50 yards into the air, and far from a two-second glide across the living room, they were circling way up at the limits of visibility for 30 seconds, a minute, two minutes at a time! I was hooked.

The planes in this kit are among the best Ive designed over the years. Most of them are capable of flying more than 30 seconds, and some, like Grasslands, are always in danger of disappearing altogether. Once you try these, youll be hooked too! Take care building these planes, make sure theyre straight, work up to high launches a bit at a time, and you should enjoy years of great flights. And do try designing your own high-performance paper airplanes! A hint: use thick paper. Otherwise, your imagination is the only limit.

Albacore The albacore is a species of tuna, a very fast and sleek fish with long pectoral fins like wings. This design was my first to fly over a minute, so high it could hardly be seen.

The sleek lines let it climb quickly, and the big wings allow it to glide slowly down. Crease the wings on the dotted lines. Carefully glue reinforcement 2 to the bottom of wing 1, flush with the front edge. Fold the glue tabs on rudder parts 3 and 4. Carefully glue 4 to the side of 3 as shown. Carefully fold fuselage 5 with a ruler.

Glue the top flap of the fuselage to the tab as shown. Make sure it isnt twisted. Glue together the very back edge of the fuselage with a tiny drop of glue. Make sure it is straight. Fold and glue ballast parts 6 through 9 inside the nose, one at a time. This plane doesnt need very much dihedral. This plane doesnt need very much dihedral.

Be sure that the fuselage isnt twisted when you glue on the wings.
Fold nose part 10 and spread glue over the inner surface of the sides. Slide it over the nose and push it all the way back to the glue tabs for the wing. Fasten it firmly to the sides of the fuselage. Glue together the two halves of the hook as well. Glue stabilizer 11 to the tabs at the rear of the fuselage. Glue the rudder to the center of the stabilizer and the top of the fuselage. Glue the rudder to the center of the stabilizer and the top of the fuselage.

Take care to get it straight. Glue the wing to the top of the fuselage. The front edge is tucked and glued under the triangular tab at the back of part 10. The rear edge floats a bit at the back. Add a bit of camber (front to back arching) to the wings, let it dry a bit, and you are ready for test flights.
