About the Author Im a Canadian from Toronto but Ive been living in Japan for almost 20 years - photo 1 Im a Canadian from Toronto, but Ive been living in Japan for almost 20 years now. I came to study and stayed because I got a teaching position at a university in Fukushima. At least, thats what I say at work. The real reason is that Japan is the world leader in paper airplane design. Lots of paper plane enthusiasts to play with, compete with, and bounce ideas off. Years ago, my love of libraries led me to a book of airplane designs by Japanese author Yasuaki Ninomiya, and my childhood correspondence with him led me to an interest in Japan as well as paper airplanes.

Ive been designing and building paper airplanes since I was in elementary school, many many years ago, but I really got hooked once I got here. In the past ten years or so Ive published twelve books of designs have been cut-and-paste models; this is my second collection of origami models. At work, I am a professor of library and information science at a small college. My colleagues sometimes ask if paper airplanes are more than just a hobby. Well, here you see me supporting my family, but not with the airplanes. On the other hand, I get to write books, do workshops at schools and community centers, and run my paper airplane cluba very outgoing hobby! Hugh, five and a half, and Fiona, three and a half, eagerly helped with the flight testing, though most of this book was written after they were safely in bed.

And behind the camera is my wife Takako, who seemed to enjoy watching me flying paper airplanes nightly in my pajamas. Diamond Dart Youve probably made lots of paper darts. But Ill bet youve never made one from square paper. There are lots of ways to do it, and Ive made a box full of them. Star Fighter This plane looked to me like the kind of plane you might see in a science fiction movie. Thats why its called Star Fighter. Planes with wings this far back wont fly straight without rudders on the wingtips. Turning them down seems to work better than turning them up. Looking futuristic is a bonus! Gold Bug A little fiddling, another fold or two, and an ordinary sort of design turned into a beetle! The Gold Bug is a little thick at the front and may be stiff, but the finished plane will look great. Youll probably need to turn up the back of the wing a little bit for stability.
