ONE OF THE NICEST COMPLIMENTS IVE EVER received was given to me by one of my husbands co-workers. We invited this nice fellow to our home for dinner, and knowing that he had a special fondness for soup, I made one of my favorites as our first course. As we sat at the table preparing to eat, he gazed at his bowl of soup, looked at me, and proclaimed, Theres a lot of love in this bowl!
Preparing food is indeed a labor of love. I hope that you enjoy the recipes in this book as much as my family does. (At my house, everyone certainly enjoyed the recipe-testing and tasting part of the effort!) Know that when you choose recipes that are not only delicious, but provide nutrients for good health as well, you truly prove how much you value those you care about. Perhaps this is why humans have always shared food with their beloved animal companionsits one of the ways that we express just how important they are to us and how much we cherish their friendship and well-being. And humans arent the only animals to use food as an opportunity for social interaction: Sharing food is a bonding experience for many species.
Remember that the recipes in this book were developed for you and your human family, as well as for your pets. When we share healthy, delicious food with our animal friends, were not spoiling them, were providing them with what they deserve: nutrient-rich food that will help them live long, healthy, and happy lives. Its our wonderful opportunity to share the love!

TO GET THE MOST FLAVOR AND NUTRIENTS from your food, youll want to purchase it organically grown whenever possible. Organically grown food is the fastest-growing sector of agriculture today, and for good reason: It has higher levels of nutrients, including cancer-fighting compounds, than most conventionally grown produce. Nutritionally, you get more for your money with organic food; plus, the Environmental Protection Agency warns that 60 percent of the herbicides, 90 percent of the fungicides, and 30 percent of the insecticides that may be used on nonorganic crops are carcinogenic (that is, cancer-causing). Organic farmers use natural substances to improve soil health, and nontoxic insecticides to protect crops; while conventional farmers use synthetic chemicals that end up in our food and water supply and in the environment. Children and pets are especially vulnerable to these toxins.
You can make a huge impact on the health of our planet (and your family) by purchasing or growing organic food. Plus, organically grown food usually tastes much better than conventionally grown food. If you cant buy organic, please dont let that deter you from eating fresh, whole foods. Eating conventionally grown fresh food is better than not eating any fresh food at all. But be sure to thoroughly wash all your produce, organic or not, before eating it. Choose fruits and veggies that are ripe and in seasonand find fresh, locally grown produce whenever possible.
As you peruse the recipes in this book, please keep in mind that all animals are individuals. Just as one of your human children may be sensitive to a particular food, one of your animal friends can have its own sensitivities. This doesnt necessarily mean that the offending food is bad, just that its not tolerated very well by that pet. Also, please use the same common sense with your animal friends that you use with your human kidsfor example, just because they really love the Banana-Date Shake, dont feed them one every day! They need a well-balanced diet just as much as the rest of your family does.
You may notice that the recipes in this book dont contain some common food offenders such as grains, dairy, peanuts, and yeast. Because grapes, raisins, and onions are under scrutiny in animal health, they have been left out as well. Obviously, if youre serving humans only and wish to include grapes or onions, you certainly could. In fact, please feel free to experiment with all the recipes in this book. Change ingredients if you wish, and let your inner chef shine through!
We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.

THE AVERAGE AMERICAN DRINKS APPROXIMATELY six servings of caffeinated beverages per day in the form of soda, coffee, and energy drinks. In addition to the caffeine, many of these beverages also contain refined sugar and artificial chemicals, none of which promote health. In fact, these substances are linked to many health problems. This chapter offers alternatives that are not only delicious, but are also very nutritious. Instead of chugging a drink that robs you of health, youll be able to whip up a beautiful beverage that provides you with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other important compounds.
