F OREWORD

If we dont live intentionally, we will be influenced and controlled by the culture around us. This truth becomes particularly evident in parenting. If we are going to raise children who will impact the world, we must deliberately instill kingdom values within them. Amy Gagnons book, Raising Powerful Children, aims to clarify kingdom values, raise our expectancy for our childrens spiritual life, and equip adults to intentionally sow seeds of truth into the hearts of young people. We carry the mandate of heaven to replicate and demonstrate what Gods world is like, and nowhere is that more evident than in the raising of our children.

Our goal at Bethel has been to nurture children who will shape the world. Children naturally dream of greatness. They pretend they are superheroes, running around the house with capes on to save the day. They gravitate toward a God-given dream of significance. But its our job, as parents and caregivers, to define what greatness in Gods kingdom truly is. We plant seeds of significance into the heart of every child, recognizing their emerging gifts and talents without trying to control the destiny of their lives. We speak words of affirmation, lend support, and choose to empower each child so that they can learn to be strong and capable in their area of gifting.

David intentionally parented Solomon, guiding his life when he was a small child. Solomon tells us this in Proverbs 4:3-5:

When I was my fathers son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he also taught me, and said to me: Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding!

David prepared Solomon for his destiny while he was still a child. Then God gave Solomon the chance to have anything he wanted. This is the only time we have a record of this kind of an opportunity being given to anyone. In my opinion, God gave him a choice because he was the only one who had been prepared to make the right choice.
