Chapter 1: The Importance of De-cluttering Your Life
Picture 12

Y ou look around your home and see that it is a mess. You are tired of seeing it look this way all of the time and you might be embarrassed to have company over having it look this bad. It seems like every time that you clean up it is all messy in just a few minutes. This chapter is going to give some quick and easy steps to declutter the whole home along with some benefits of doing this before going into the best tips to declutter each room in the home in no time at all.

Easy De-cluttering Steps

  1. Pick out a roomit does not matter which room you choose, just pick one that you would like to work on. One idea is to pick the room that you are dreading the most when it comes to cleaning because it is such a mess and a pain. If you get this out of the way first, you will be able to be done with it and can concentrate on the others ones next. You will get to all of the rooms at some point so do not fret too much about this.
  1. Choose a rewardmake this reward enticing to you and one that can be given out later when you are successful. When you are done with the cleaning process, you will get to reward yourself with this prize so it is going to be your motivation to keep on going. You can pick a nice massage, going out for ice cream, or having an afternoon to yourself.
  1. Set your deadlineyou are only working on one room at a time here, so pick a deadline that will give you enough time but also challenges you to be quick. It is usually best to give about an hour to finish a room. This allows you time to get things done, but will also hurry you along so you do not get distracted. You can always come back to the room if you need to after the hour, but take a little break to catch a breath.
  1. Time itfind a timer that you can set in order to alert you when your time is up. Usually an hour in a room is going to be enough. Judge the amount of mess that is in there though; a big room that hasnt been cleaned in months or something like a storage room, is probably going to need longer than an hour.
  1. Sort it outpick out one of the items in the room at a time and decide to dump it or keep it. You can also have a bag for donating if you would like. Sort things out quickly and do not put a lot of thought. When you pick up the item, which word, dump, donate, or keep, comes to mind first? This is where the item should go.
  1. Keep going until the time is donewhen your timer goes off, stop. In most cases, if you did this right, you will be able to be almost done and quit. You can keep going if you like and want to finish up, or save it for the next de-cluttering day.
  1. Celebrateonce you have the room cleaned, you can celebrate with that reward you had earlier on.
  1. Keep everything organizednow that you have gotten rid of a lot of the things you no longer need, it becomes a lot easier to keep everything organized.
  1. Maintaindo not let the room get back into the same mess that it was before. This is going to add more work. Just a little spot cleaning throughout the week will help it to look so much better than before your cleaning.
  1. Go to other roomsif you have time, get started on another room in the house or divide these up into different days. Once a room is clean, make sure to maintain it.

Picking out which things you are going to get rid of and keep can be difficult. Some people like to hold on to certain objects because they do not want to hurt someones feelings, they feel like they will fit into it at some point, or they are not sure if they are going to be able to use it at some point in the future.

To determine if you should keep something or not, think about how long it has been since you used it. If it has been sitting in the back of your closet for the past year or more, you should get rid of it. The only exception to this would be something like your grandmothers glass punch bowl that has been in the family for years. Everything else has got to go if you are not using it actively in your current life.
