CHAPTER1
Vance spent his childhood in the small town ofJackson, Kentucky. It was a beautiful place that housed the kindestpeople with a deeply-embedded Appalachian culture. They respectedthe dead and helped others in need, but they were also the sort ofpeople who shirked work and made excuses for everything.
Vance spent most of his time with hisgrandparents who shielded him from the worst of his family. HisMamaw primarily ensured that he never witnessed any of his mother'sdrama during her occasional visits. The family moved to Ohio toescape all the vice and poverty, but he still visited Jackson oftento visit his old and ailing great-grandmother.
Jackson had quite a few issues, and as if thepoverty wasn't enough, the town began to struggle even more whendrug addiction took root. The education system was failing as well, but with poor parents lacking the luxury of choice, they wereforced to send their kids to the terrible schools despite the poorconditions. When Vance was a small child, he had a deep sense ofappreciation towards the town and his family, but as he grew older,it was painfully evident that the people were suffering onlybecause they weren't doing anything about it.
The people of Vance's youth are mean andhesitate to open about their problems. Despite the fact that theysimply can't afford treatment for even the most basic medical care, they take the mere discussion of it as an offense. They don't wantto be judged, but this attitude forced them into denial about theirserious issues.
CHAPTER 2
Amidst all the chaos that surrounded his life,Vance's grandparents supported him and taught him the lessons mostkids learn from their parents. They did their best to ensure thathe had the best shot to live the American Dream, although theyrarely expected much from their lives. Mamaw became pregnant withPapaw's child when she was just 14, but she lied about her age toprevent any further complications.
With an extra mouth to feed, things looked grimfor the young couple, so they left for Ohio as soon as possible.Papaw worked at Armco a steel company that regularly hiredapplicants from Kentucky. As other families just like them weremigrating, they found themselves in a familiar environment, although still separated from their extended family. Despite beingsurrounded by many other Kentuckians, prob lems abounded on all sides. T hepeople back in Kentucky expected them to visit regularly, despitethe fact that they lacked the means. In addition, the white Ohioanswere suspicious of the Appalachian migrants.
The Vance family did their best to adjust totheir new lifestyle. They faced a few challenges, but they knewthat privilege and wealth mattered a great deal in America.Middleton was far different from Kentucky, and they focused ontheir work and did everything possible to make their lives better.
