Once upon a time, there was a princess

With saucer eyes, my four-year-old daughter, Scarlett, hung on my every word as I read her favorite bedtime story for the third time that week. We both loved the happily ever after ending, but only one of us was buying how the princess got there.

Scarletts mother caught the familiar brick-throwing look on my face, rolled her eyes, and left the room. But I resisted the temptation of doing an on-the-spot rewrite or hurling the storybook across the room and telling my daughter how it really happens. A big part of being a parent involves protecting my little girl from harsh truths such as, Yeah, but some princes are just out to get laid and never call you again, so heres how to spot those clowns a mile away! Most of all, I couldnt blow her tiny mind with what would soon be called groundbreaking and award-winning research that I was knee-deep into if I said, But, princess, heres the good news: there are only seven different types of princes to choose from. Know these different types, and the mystery about men will vanish. You will see that there is no one-size-fits-all dating advice. Youll also see that there is no Prince Perfect, but there is a prince whos perfect for you. And, with this power, you will be able to capture that mans heart in a way that not even his own mother could. You will know him better than he knows himself. As a result, you will possess the key to his soul.

My daughter has many years ahead to slowly absorb the impact of all my bombshells, but you dont. Your time is now, so put on your hard hat.

There is no rainbow without first experiencing rain. If youre reading this book, you are living proof that every other dating/relationship strategy youve studied to this point (and I bet a dollar to a donut youve tried them all) misses the mark to some degree, or youd be happily married by now, right?

Most men need love just as much as women. The key difference is that, as contradictory as it may seem, most single men arent consciously going around looking for love. Sex? Always. But love? In guys locker rooms, youll hear bedpost-notch pissing contests, harrowing accounts from marriage-prison-camp survivors, and overdramatized stalker stories. But the guy who says aloud, Thats great, yall, but Im looking for lurve will attract strange looks, ridicule, and a towel-slap across his sissy-ass face. If hes more fortunate (perhaps it happens at the golf club instead of the gym), the other guys will quietly treat him as if hes mentally handicapped from that day forward. (By the way, if youre thinking about fact-checking anything I tell you in this book with your male friends or relatives, dont expect an honest answer, lest they violate Guy Code. Oh, this Sheridan guys got that all wrong. Im not like that, theyll say, looking at the floor. What, you think wed admit to you how we really can be?)

So, our mission (yes, Im coming with you) is to find that poor, towel-slapped guyeven if he was dumb enough to state his noble intentions aloudand, most importantly, making sure hes the specific brand of husband material thats right for you.
