Whether you're reading this right now to findsome inspiring volunteer ideas for yourself, or if you're a parentlooking to share this knowledge with your child, you came to theright place! Volunteering in your community is such a wonderfulthing to do. Not only do you feel good when you help out yourcommunity, but you also get to see first hand how you can helpchange and impact others around you in a positive way. Volunteerwork is a great way to unplug yourself from the electronics allaround us, grab some friends, and do some good. It also looks goodon college and job applications! With all that being said I hopeyou find these ideas motivating to get out there and help make adifference.
Volunteer Your Time at a Soup Kitchen
If you have a local soup kitchen or homelessshelter, consider volunteering some of your time to go in and helpserve meals. As these facilities usually serve a high number ofindividuals they are almost always more than happy to have an extraset of hands to help out. Just call them ahead of time letting themknow that you would like to come in and volunteer so they can tellyou what time would work best. Check with your parents as they mayneed to or want to accompany you due to your age.
Read to Kids at Your Local Library
Many public libraries offer a read aloud hourto children. Call your local library and ask them if they offerthis for children. If they do tell them you are interested involunteering to read. If they do not have such a program in placealready I would ask if you could start a weekly read aloud. Set aday and time with the librarian. Offer to bring some fliers in toput up advertising the days and times. Now you have a great newvolunteer opportunity! You can even recruit some friends to join inand offer to read as well!
Donate Some Time to Your Local AnimalShelter
Animal shelters are a great place to get insome volunteer hours! There are many ways that you can help lend anextra hand at an animal shelter. Some ways including bathing theanimals, taking the dogs for a walk, cleaning the kennels, andfeeding the animals. Animal shelters love volunteers, so if you arean animal lover I would definitely recommend getting in touch withyour local shelter to see what different kinds of volunteeropportunities they may have.
Volunteer Your Time at a Retirement/NursingHome
Another great place to volunteer your time isat a retirement or nursing home. This is another spot wherevolunteers are more than welcome! A great way to volunteer is tohelp out during activity time or even just to come and keep many ofthe residents company. You will find that the people here haveyears of wisdom and many interesting stories to share!
Volunteer at Your Local Hospital
This is a good one for teens! Hospitals arealways on the lookout for volunteer help. If you are thinking ofstudying a health profession in college after high school thenvolunteering at your local hospital could be a great way to seefirsthand an inside look into how things operate. The best way tosee what volunteer positions are available is to call your localhospital and ask how to get involved with volunteering. They willbe more than happy to point you in the right direction!
Volunteer at Your Local Food Bank
Check with your local food bank or foodpantry to see how you can get involved with volunteering. Theseplaces love to have volunteer help with various tasks such asaccepting donations, organizing the food pantry, and with handingout donations. If you are old enough to drive you could also offerto help pick up donations, as stores sometimes donate food andthese organizations often need help getting these donations tothem.
Habitat for Humanity Opportunities
Habitat for Humanity is anon profit organization that helps build affordable housing forfamilies. You can volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and help buildthese homes, and by doing so you can help make a difference formany families in need. You can search for opportunities that are inyour local area here .
Organize a Community Clean Up
Cleaning up your community is just anotherway to get involved! Grab some friends and organize a day and timefor a community clean up. Is there a local park or community areathat has a bad litter problem? Target that area for the communityclean up. Let everyone know when the day and time will be to get asmany people involved as you can. Be sure to bring some garbage bagsand plastic gloves or trash grabber sticks. Also, you couldorganize a BBQ for everyone who helped after or bring somerefreshments and snacks for after the clean up!
Summer Camp Counselor
During the summer many kids go off to summercamp. With that comes summer camps that need camp counselors. Teenscan volunteer as camp counselors and spend some time mentoringyounger aged children while enjoying the outdoors and makingconnections that can help them as they head off to college and onthose job interviews! Check your local newspaper want ads andonline on your local camp websites to see if they are posting forcamp counselors wanted. It also doesn't hurt to call your localcamps and tell them you are interested!
Your Local Church
Do you have a local church you are affiliatedwith? Even if you don't you can still call around and ask aboutvolunteer opportunities that may interest you! Local churches oftenneed help in a couple of different areas such as Sunday school,their daycare program, and also their summer camps. If this issomething you would be interested in I would recommend giving yourlocal church a call to see where they might be able to find you agood fit for volunteering.
Start a Community Garden
A great way to bring your community togetheris over starting a community garden! With a community garden youand your neighbors can take part in something that everyone workson together, and in turns reaps the benefits of together, making ita winning situation all around. It also helps cut down on the costsof fresh fruits and veggies. Get together with those around you inyour community and see if they would be interested in starting acommunity garden. Find a dedicated space where the garden will be.Then be sure to put in your share of the work and watch everyonecome together over something positive!
Coach a Youth Sports Team
Are you skilled in a certain sport? Why notuse your skills and love of the game to volunteer you time coachinga youth sports team? Volunteers are always needed when it comes toyouth sports. There are other volunteer opportunities in this areaas well such as being a referee or helping out with the snack bar.Inquire with your city's athletic group for volunteer opportunityinformation.
Cook and Bring Meals to Your LocalFirehouse
If you love to cook then there's a way youcan share that skill by cooking and bringing meals to your localfirehouse! A nice home cooked meal will put a smile on the faces ofthe staff at your local firehouse and with the long hours andchallenging work they face your efforts will be muchappreciated!
