Aromatherapy, also known as Essential OilTherapy, is both an art and science that involves using aromaticplant oils like essential oils and various aromatic elements toharmonize, balance and improve the physical, psychological andemotional well-being. For example, smell the roses, they containsseveral properties like sedative, antiseptic, antidepressant,antiviral, anti-spasmodic, heart tonic, laxative, etc. to name afew.
What is Aeromatherapy?
Aromatherapy can be provided as analternative medicine or complementary therapy, alongside ordinarytreatment. Aroma therapists or those who specialize in thispractice, use several blends of aromatic essential oils issuedthrough massage, topical application, or inhalation to improve thechances of getting desired results. In aromatherapy, pure essentialoils are used in a controlled way.
The term Aromatherapy is originated fromAromatherapie that is influenced by a French chemist Rene MauriceGattefosse. In 1920s, he met a laboratory accident due to which hishand and arm were burnt. He sunk his hand in the jar of purelavender oil by mistake. He felt speedy recovery of his thirddegree burns without scarring. He instantly made a research on theproperties of essential lavender oil, which helped in recovery.Lavender oil was being used to recover the limbs of soldiers whowere lost because of gangrene during World War II.
Some essential oils like tea tree oil havebeen found with anti-microbial properties. But there is still nosolid evidence found that proves its efficiency against fungal,bacterial and viral infections.
History of Aromatherapy
The history of aromatherapy dates back toaround 3500 years ago. The roots of aromatherapy are inexorablyconnected to the use of aromatic medicines, which were combinedwith mysticism, religion and magic.
That was the time when incense made ofaromatic herbs, woods, and spices, was first burned by ancientEgyptians in honor of their lords. According to them, the smokereaches the heavens carrying their wishes and prayers to their godsdirectly.

Egyptians were developed the process ofmummification and embalming in Egypt during the 2650 BC to 2575 BC(over the period of 3rd Dynasty) for seekingimmortality. They used galbanum, frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood,cinnamon, spikenard and juniper berry to preserve the royal bodiesfor preparing the afterlife.
They supplied the valuable spices and herbsmanually through Arab merchants around hostile deserts fordistribution in Babylon, Assyria, Greece, China, Egypt, Persia andRome. Myrrh and frankincense were the most desired materials. Verysoon, the demand for these materials overtook supply. Suddenly,their value sky-rocketed and these materials cost equal to that ofexpensive metals and gems.
Egyptians The Fathers of Perfumery
Egyptians were obsessed to use commonfragrances every day and in every occasion. At celebrations andfestive seasons, women used perfumed cones, which melt with heatand release soothing fragrance. They smear themselves with oilafter bathing to prevent the dryness with the sun and to flourishtheir skin.
During the period from 1539 BC to 657 BC(from 18th to 25th Dynasty), Egyptians kepton using aromatics in medicine, incense, cosmetics and perfumes.The perfumery in Egypt was renowned as the leading industry in theentire Middle East, just a couple of hundred years before theChrists birth.
Entry of Aromatherapy in Greece
During the last millennia, the prosperity ofbotanical pharmacopoeia of Egypt had been incorporated by severalother cultures. The vast knowhow of aromatic treatments of theEgyptians has been adopted by the Hebrews, Babylonians andAssyrians. Around 300 BC when the breakdown of Egyptian empire wasstarted, Europe earned reputation as the soul of experimentalmedicine. They instantly evolved the new methods of healing whichwere scientifically proven too.
Asclepius was a Greek physician who practicedcombining surgery and herbs with his lastly unrivalled skills in1200 BC. Even after his demise, he was known as the god of healing.His reputation in Greek mythology was so grand that thousands ofhealing temples were erected and known as Asclepieon in hishonor.
