Introduction In order to understand my love for Christmas you need to - photo 2

Introduction
In order to understand my love for Christmas, you need to realize that I was created by a Bah humbugger.
My mom was born in Scotland and had her best years as a child. When her dad died very suddenly when she was eight, her whole life changed in an instant. Her mother was given $5,000 by her late husbands family and told to leave or they would take her children away. So she and her two small children moved to Canada where she met a man the first week she arrived and married him out of fear of being alone.
The family moved to North Dakota and used her $5,000 to buy a farm. Needless to say, they were very poor and Christmas was never in their budget. Because of her upbringing, my mom has only one
Christmas memory. One summer her stepfathers sister came to the farm for a visit and gave my mom a rag doll as a gift. Oh, my mom loved this doll, and it was never out of her grasp or sight... for the week. But when the woman left, the doll disappeared, too. My mom looked and looked, and cried and cried, but she couldnt find it anywhere. She had almost forgotten about the doll a few months later. Sure enough, on Christmas morning, she opened a plain-looking box with her name on it and, like magic, the doll reappeared as her gift from Santa. Usually, all she got was an apple and an orange. It was a very bittersweet holiday that year!
Now, my dad, on the other hand, was just as poor as Mom was growing up. He also lived on a farm, in mid-Wisconsin with no electricity, no indoor toilets and no modern conveniences. Even so, his home was filled with the Christmas spirit. Grandpa would go out to the woods and cut down a tree, pulling it back to the house with his horses. Hed bring it in through the front door and set it up in the parlor, a room they only used on special occasions.
The whole family worked together decorating the tree with popcorn and berry garlands and old glass ornaments brought over from Germany many years before by great-grandparents. Then, on Christmas Eve theyd clip candles on the tree as lights, and the whole family would gather in the parlor. It was so special.... The candles only flickered for a very short time, but it was well worth it. Then theyd all sing Silent Night and blow out the candles. The room would be filled with a soft glow from the kerosene lanterns, the spirit of Christmas and the love of a family.
When I was a child, we always went to my dads parents home for the holidays. There was lots of laughter, lots of love, lots of food and lots of noise. You put that many Freunds together and its loud! Think fifty people with loud mouths like mineand many of them were auctioneers.
As you can see, my parents learned love in very different ways. Even though my mom never really liked Christmas, her bah humbug attitude became a running family joke, and we made it a joyful part of our holiday. She always had her Bah Humbug aprons and towels hanging in the kitchen. She even had a toilet seat cover that bah humbugged.
And, God love this woman... our home became the place to come for Christmas dinner after my grandparents could no longer do it. She fed the whole world on Christmas day with great love and care. She took her pits and made fruit salad out of them. Im sure she wouldve had you over to our house at Christmas. (I love you, Mom.... You gave us grit and many happy Christmases. You taught us a dollop of whipping cream makes everything in life so much sweeter!)
Since I grew up loving Christmas, and I make my business helping women decorate themselves, I decided to share what Ive learned in a book about holiday entertaining the Quacker way: with lots of fun but little fuss. Im here to tell you that Christmas is the season to sparkle, not to stress. I will show you how to make that happen.
Here Ive collected my most-requested how-tos for creating a memorable holiday of your own: scrumptiously simple recipes, fabulously fun parties and decorations that anyone can make. These ideas and inspirations will help you quack up your holidays, from meeting new neighbors by hosting a (calorie-free) cookie exchange party or giving your budget a break with a homemade gift of simmering potpourri to making a perfect no-lumps, never-fail gravy without breaking a sweat. So set your busy and hectic life aside for a few hours and lets celebrate Christmas!

Seize the spirit of the season: Finding the magic in the madness
Dont Let the Turkeys Get You Down
No matter how hard you try and no matter how much stress you put on yourself and your dear family, Christmas is not always going to turn out perfectly. You can do every single thing I suggest in this book, plus a few old wives tales, plus all of your girlfriends suggestions, and it can still all go to hell in a hand basket, as my grandpa used to say. Want proof?
One Christmas we were having our typical houseful of people over: The entire Bice family; our in-laws, the Grahams; our dear friend Lori and her daughter; plus anyone else we could think of.
That year, my son Tim and I had shows on QVC during Thanksgiving, so we didnt have the chance to host a traditional turkey dinner at the house like we usually did. So instead we decided wed make all the Thanksgiving fixins for Christmas, which called for only the best spread we could produce. We planned and planned and planned.
During the season Id been watching QVC, as usual, and saw a large deep fryer. Well, you know I just had to have it. Id heard that deep-frying a turkey was the best, and I was determined to give it a try. I ordered the fryer and within a few days it was at the doorstep. I called Lori and told her we needed to take it for a test-fry! We decided that she would be the turkey chef extraordinaire, the one in charge of figuring it all out.
The next day Lori arrived at the house with all the supplies and set about the big turkey test. The turkey came out crisp and brown on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. I have to tell you... it was close to the best thing Ive ever tasted. It always seemed to me that the turkey breast got a little dry by the time the dark meat was done when cooked in the oven, but not in the deep fryer. And, surprisingly, it wasnt the least bit greasy. Well, Loris turkey was a huge success so we added it to our Thanksgiving-for-Christmas menu right on the spot.
Christmas Day dawned a bit gloomy, but we werent worried about the deep-fried turkey. What could possibly go wrong?

Lori and I had been cooking for days, and we had enough food to feed a small town. We were going to roast a turkey, make a big pot of homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, a big batch of sausage stuffing, sweet potatoes, roast prime rib, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls and, of course, my famous coleslaw. The pice de rsistance was going to be the deep-fried turkey with a huge helping of prayer that the bad weather held off.
