    David J. Perdue is an implementation delivery engineer for EMC, an information infrastructure provider. He is the author of two other LEGO books, including the bestselling first edition of this book published in 2007 and Competitive MINDSTORMS: A Complete Guide to Robotic Sumo Using LEGO MINDSTORMS (Apress, 2004). David has a degree in Management Information Systems from Liberty University and lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he enjoys spending time with family and friends, discovering coffee shops in the Twin Cities, and writing about technology.     Tim Rueger is an avid LEGO hobbyist and robotics enthusiast. He has worked as an analog chip designer at Cirrus Logic (formerly Crystal Semiconductor) in Austin, Texas, since 1997. He earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1991. His wife, Shelley, graciously tolerates his varied choices in hobbies and his peculiar sense of humor. Tim enjoys mentoring home-school students in LEGO robotics competitions, including FIRST LEGO League, Robofest, and other local contests. His favorite LEGO creation is an all-LEGO floating-arm trebuchet capable of launching payloads over 40 feet. He hopes to someday defeat Steve Hassenplug in robotic sumo.

    Christopher R. Smith (aka Littlehorn) is a senior quality assurance inspector in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL) at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He has been designing LEGO MINDSTORMS robots since rediscovering the LEGO product in 1997, which led to joining the LEGO MINDSTORMS Developer Program for the NXT system.     Introduction

    When the LEGO Group commenced the MINDSTORMS series in 1998 with the release of the Robotics Invention System (RIS), it might have wondered what the outcome of LEGO-based robotics sets would be. Any ambiguity about the success of the MINDSTORMS series soon vanished, however, as the RIS sparked incredible sales, publicity, and enthusiasm around the world. Over the next eight years, MINDSTORMS inspired a multitude of fan websites, numerous robotic competitions, and more than 40 unofficial books based on the series.

    During this time, the LEGO Group continued to expand the MINDSTORMS series with a variety of innovative products. The Robotics Discovery Set, Droid Developer Kit, Dark Side Developer set, Vision Command set, two updated versions of the RIS (1.5 and 2.0), and numerous expansion packs for the RIS made their appearances from 1998 to 2001. And then the flow of new MINDSTORMS products came to an abrupt halt.

    As the years 2002 to 2005 failed to reveal significant developments within the MINDSTORMS product line, fans became concerned, eventually asking the unthinkable: Is MINDSTORMS being phased out? By the end of 2005, some fans had clearly given up hope.

    Nevertheless, the LEGO Group had no intentions of retiring the MINDSTORMS series. It had been hard at work developing yet another phenomenal product: the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT set. LEGO finally revealed this secret project in January 2006 at the International Consumer Electronics Show, slating its release for fall of that year.

    As the highly anticipated NXT set became available in various countries throughout the latter part of 2006, fans quickly recognized the set as the most powerful MINDSTORMS release to date. It implemented many exciting new features, including motors with built-in rotation sensors ( servo motors ), a variety of sensors, the NXT microcomputer, hundreds of other building elements (that is, LEGO pieces), the NXT-G programming software, and more.

    Some LEGO fans expected to see a few expansion packs for the NXT set released in the following year. That didnt happen. Instead, three years later in 2009, LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0a revised version of the original NXT setwas announced and then officially released in August 2009. NXT fans began comparing the 2.0 set to its predecessor as soon as the new kit landed on their doorsteps, and I did some comparisons of my own.
