CONTENTS
Guide
Dear Reader,
Did you ever dream of knitting a sweater entirely to your own specifications? You know this: There are plenty of knitting patterns out there, but in most cases, adapting them to your own needs and ideas is tricky. Sure, you can adjust the length a little bit, or switch out a cuff design. But when it comes to a differently shaped armhole, or to changing a pattern altogether, things can become complicated!
With this book, I want to enable you to design your own sweater in a creative way, using the Mix and Match method. You can pick elements that suit you from an array of different basic designs, and arrange them in your imagination into your perfect sweater. Combine different stitch patterns, adjust the sleeve length, or choose a differ ent neckline shapeand all elements will fit together perfectly.
A few suggestions for possible combinations are presented in Mix and MatchStep by Step to Your Sweater Bliss. Perhaps one of these ready-to-use designs is already what you are looking for? If not, youll find plenty of inspiration for coming up with your own creative solutions.
I wish you much fun on your journey through the world of sweater design!
Yours,
With the help of this guide, it is very easy to design your own sweater. All you need are a notepad and pen. Just work through each section, and write down the steps needed to bring your design idea to life.
THE BASIC SWEATER
In the first chapter, I introduce six basic sweaters. The only difference between these basic sweaters is in the stitch patterns usedthe garment pattern is the same for all of them. First, pick the design or pattern that comes closest to what you have in mind. Even this can still be changed in a later step.
THE BODY SHAPE
Instead of the straight shape of the basic sweaters, all designs can also be knit in an oversized fit, fitted to the body, or as an A-line shape. On pages , you will find instructions for these modifications to choose from.
THE CUFFS
All basic sweaters have ribbed cuffs and hems. If you are not fond of this feature, you can pick out a different cuff or hem design from eight additional suggestions on . Later, when it comes to actually knitting the cuffs or hems, you will just have to make sure that you increase or decrease as many stitches in the last cuff or hem row needed to match the stitch count for your basic sweater, as listed for continuing after the cuff or hem.
THE NECKLINE
All basic sweaters feature a crewneck with ribbed neckband. On , I introduce additional possibilities for your neckline design. Just pick the one you like best, and write down the appropriate instructions.
THE ARMHOLE
You dont like the straight sleeve tops of the basic sweaters and prefer sleeve caps or raglan sleeves? Instructions for these, which can be used with all basic sweaters, can be found on .
THE SLEEVE LENGTH
The obligatory long sleeves shown on all basic sweaters may be worked in a length or as short sleeves for all armhole shapes. How this is done is explained on .
THE STITCH PATTERNS
You want to knit a lace sweater for yourself, but cant warm up to the stitch pattern of the basic sweater? No problem: On , four alternate stitch patterns for every basic sweater are shown, which you can use as substitutes without further adjustments.
Now you have gathered all the puzzle pieces needed for your dream sweater. Mark the relevant pages in the book, write down the appropriate instructions on a piece of paper, or use the note-taking form on .
You are all set now to start your project. Before you begin, please take the time to read through the general notes on .
