Kristal Wicks enthusiasm leaps out from every artistic and inviting page, and I was instantly eager to try every technique and project. I am fortunate to have Kristal as my friend, and in person she is always happy and eager to share her vast knowledge. Her color sense is amazing and she is constantly experimenting with new ideas. In the pages of this book, she shares that enthusiasm with you. With clear images and directions, the easy techniques and superb projects come to life. Everything from basic supplies to detailed directions for making finished beads into jewelry is shown in beautiful close-up photographs, beautifully and concisely explained.
Whether you are an experienced jewelry artist or these ideas are all new to you, Fabulous Fabric Beads is full of aha! momentseven though I use some of these surface design techniques, I found myself saying, I wish I had thought of that! on almost every page. I cant wait to try some of the techniques since so many are new to me, like . The glossary of stringing techniques is especially helpful for a novice like me. This book is a true winnerfull of imaginative and original techniques. Sherrill Kahn
Welcome I am so excited to share my fabric bead secrets with you! After years of making dichroic glass jewelry, I heard my customers ask for something lightertheir earlobes were dangling too low after years of earlobe abuse. So I set out on a journey to capture the vibrant colors of dichroic glass with some kind of weightless material that was durable and exciting.
Thus Sassy Silkies, my original handpainted silk scrolls, were born. They were my first fabric bead babies, and since then they have been joined in my repertoire with lots of fun new beads! While youre exploring the projects and techniques in this book, have no fear of making mistakes when it comes to creating your own fabric beads. Many times a mistake has turned out to be hugely successful in ways Id never imagined or showed me a better way to do something. Plop that paintbrush on that silk and go with the flow! Always remember theres plenty of fabric available, so experiment all you want. Go outside the box and break the rules! I believe that when it comes to true art there arent any rules, just a whisper inside directing you to add a dab of this or that color and see what happens. You can always add another layer or paint over it! So many of us have stashes of our favorite fabrics, beads, buttons, and other materials.
Fabulous Fabric Beads are a great way to use your stash and scraps, since you need so little fabric to create these beauties. Whats important is to embrace the creative process and PLAY! My hope for this book is to act as your tour guide and provide endless inspiration along your creative path. Now, take a deep breath and go make cool stuff! Kristal
Materials & Tools
There are tons of fun supplies on the market for making and decorating beads. These are some of my favorites. Most of the materials can be found at your local craft, bead, quilting, or fabric stores.
Fabrics
You can use all types of fabric for making beads.
Smoother fabrics work better, but some nubby fabrics can result in rich textured treasures, so feel free to play. Ive had the most luck with silks and cottons. Theres no need to prewash your fabric, just use it as is. If youre not sure how a technique will turn out, practice on a small swatch first. Always trim your fabrics after you paint and embellish them.
