Introduction
Think of this book as a map. Like any map, it describes how to get from point A to point B and points out things along the way that may be of interest to you. But unlike a typical map, this one concerns patterns of probability that you may encounter during your journey. It helps you to make informed decisions and choices based on these patterns.
The information in this book differs from the information you would receive from an astrologer about your natal chart in several important ways. A natal chart is tailored according to your particular time, place, and date of birth. Your time of birth determines your rising sign or ascendant, which sets up the structure of your natal chart. In the first chapter, you can read about this in a little more depth. Your natal chart is unique to you. But in this book, like in newspaper and Internet horoscopes, your sun sign becomes your rising sign or ascendant and the transits and eclipses are placed in the chart accordingly. In this way, the information is accessible to everyone of a particular sign.
Lets say youre a Virgo. Lets say that natally you have Pisces rising and a Virgo moon. This means that Virgo is actually on your seventh-house cusp natally, because Pisces is exactly opposite Virgo. This means that any mention of transits to Virgo actually will hit your natal seventh house, not your ascendant or first house, so you should read the section on Pisces to obtain the maximum benefit from this book. However, any mention of aspectsthe angles that planets make to one another or to your sun signwont be dependent on the houses. These descriptions will apply regardless of your rising sign.
Confused yet?
Dont be.
Astrology is just another language, probably simpler in many ways than English, and once you learn the alphabet, its relatively easy to put the story together. You dont have to know anything about astrology to benefit from this book. It can be used alone or in conjunction with Sydney Omarrs daily guides to each sign for 2010. The only qualities you need to bring to this journey are curiosity and a hunger for self-knowledge.
Star Stuff
How much do you know about the day you were born? What was the weather like that day? If you were born at night, had the moon already risen? Was it full or the shape of a Cheshire cats grin? Was the delivery ward quiet or bustling with activity? Unless your mom or dad has a very good memory, youll probably never know the full details. But theres one thing you can know for sure: On the day you were born, the sun was located in a particular zone of the zodiac, an imaginary 360-degree belt that circles the earth. The belt is divided into twelve equal 30-degree portions called signs.
If you were born between March 21 and April 19, then the sun was passing through the sign of Aries, so we say that your sun sign is Aries. Each of the twelve signs has distinct attributes and characteristics. Aries individuals, for example, are independent pioneers, fearless and passionate. Virgos, born between August 23 and September 22, are perfectionists with discriminating intellects and a genius for details. Geminis, born between May 21 and June 20, are networkers and communicators.
The twelve signs are categorized according to element and quality or modality. The first category reads like a basic science lessonfire, earth, air, and waterand describes the general physical characteristics of the signs.
Fire signsAries, Leo, Sagittariusare warm, dynamic individuals who are always passionate about what they do.
Earth signsTaurus, Virgo, Capricornare the builders of the zodiac, practical and efficient, grounded in everything they do.
Air signsGemini, Libra, Aquariusare people who live mostly in the world of ideas. They are terrific communicators.
Water signsCancer, Scorpio, Pisceslive through their emotions, imaginations, and intuitions.
The second category describes how each sign operates in the physical world, how adaptable it is to circumstances.
Cardinal signsAries, Cancer, Libra, Capricornare initiators. These people are active, impatient, restless. Theyre great at starting things, but unless a project or a relationship holds their attention, they lose interest and may not finish what they start.
Fixed signsTaurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquariusare deliberate, controlled. These individuals tend to move more slowly than cardinal signs, are often stubborn, and resist change. They seek roots, stability.
Mutable signsGemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Piscesare adaptable. These people are flexible, changeable, communicative. They dont get locked into rigid patterns or belief systems.

The Planets
The planets in astrology are the players who make things happen. Theyre the characters in the story of your life. And this story always begin with the sun, the giver of life.
Your sun sign describes your self-expression, your primal energy, the essence of who you are. Its the archetypal pattern of your self. When you know another persons sun sign, you already have a great deal of information about that person. Lets say youre a Taurus who has just started dating a Gemini. How compatible are you? On the surface, it wouldnt seem that you have much in common. Taurus is a fixed earth sign; Gemini is a mutable air sign. Taurus is persistent, stubborn, practical, a cultivator as opposed to an initiator. Gemini is a chameleon, a communicator, social, with a mind as quick as lightning. Taurus is ruled by Venus, which governs the arts, money, beauty, love, and romance, and Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which governs communication and travel. There doesnt seem to be much common ground. But before we write off this combination, lets look a little deeper.
Suppose the Taurus has Mercury in Gemini and the Gemini has Venus in Taurus? This would mean that the Taurus and Gemini each have their rulers in the other persons sign. They probably communicate well and probably enjoy travel (Mercury) and would see eye to eye on romance, art, and music (Venus). They might get along so well, in fact, that they collaborate on creative projects.
Each of us is also influenced by the other nine planets (the sun and moon are treated like planets in astrology) and the signs they were transiting when you were born. Suppose our Taurus and Gemini have the same moon sign? The moon rules our inner needs, emotions, and intuition, and all that makes us feel secure within ourselves. Quite often, compatible moon signs can overcome even the most glaring difference in sun signs because the two people share similar emotions.
