This one is for Rob and Megan,
with much love always
One afternoon at our local dog park, a teacher and performance pianist mentioned that she was interviewing for a new job for the fall and was nervous about the upcoming interview. I asked Estis her birth information and the time and date of the interview and entered the information into an astrology app on my phone.
By placing the transits for the date of the interview into a bi-wheel around her birth chart, I could see which of her natal planets were being triggered by the transits. On the date of the interview, Jupiterthe planet that symbolizes luck, expansion, higher education, publishing, worldviewwas forming a beneficial angle to her Midheaven, the part of the chart that represents profession and career. I told her I felt she would get the job.
A few days later, I ran into her again at the dog park, and she said shed been asked back for a second interview. I did another bi-wheel for the date and time of the second interview. These transits also looked promising. Jupiter would still be forming a powerful angle to her Midheaven, and Mercurythe planet of communicationwould be forming a beneficial angle to her sun sign and wouldnt be retrograde. Also, just as importantly, the second interview would occur during a new moon, a time when new opportunities are ushered into our lives.
The job is yours already, I told her.
Sure enough, a week later, she texted me that shed gotten the job.
Transits, the daily motion of the planets, impact our lives according to the nature of the planets, the angles they form to each other and to our natal planets. For the purpose of this book, well be dealing with the signs and placements of the planets in respect to your sun sign and the angles these planets make to your sun sign. We will also be looking at the new and full moons each month and how they are likely to affect you. Retrograde planets are also taken into account.
When a planet is retrograde, it appears to be moving backward and enters a kind of dormancy so that its energy doesnt function at full capacity. The sun and the moon are the only planets that never turn retrograde, and Mercury turns retrograde the most oftenthree times a year, for about three weeks a pop. During this time, communication and travel are likely to encounter snafus. Its wise not to sign contracts, or buy electronics or cars because, in all likelihood, youll end up returning them. It isnt time to launch projects. The common wisdom for a Mercury retrograde is to revise, review and revisit. One of the curious attributes of a Mercury retro is that old friends and formers lovers and spouses sometimes resurface in our lives. If you travel during a Mercury retro, then you may return to the location at a future date.
In the monthly roundup sections, youll find references to the days when Mercury and other planets turn retrograde and go direct and what it may mean for you. Ive also included references to the new and full moons each month as well as the solar and lunar eclipses.
A Mercury Retrograde Story
On November 7, 2000, Mercury had been retrograde since mid-October: first in Scorpio, then it slipped back into Libra and at 9:20 p.m., it turned direct in that sign. When Mercury stations, which means its about to turn retrograde or direct, the potential for miscommunication is strong. But for that date, the station caused bedlam because it was election day in the U.S.
Astrologers were predicting chaos, and sure enough, at 7:49 p.m. NBC decided they had enough data from exit polls in Florida. Tom Brokaw called the state for Al Gore. With Floridas twenty-five electoral votes, it meant he had won the election.
However, shortly after 10 p.m.less than an hour after Mercury had turned directBrokaw backtracked and said that George W. Bush had won the state and the election. We all know what ensued after thatthe endless dispute over the chads on Palm Beach Countys ballot and the eventual decision by the Supreme Court that Bush was the 43rd president of the U.S.
So be forewarned! In the introduction to each year, youll find the dates for that years Mercury retrogrades.
