ART BERNSTEIN has written eighteen other nature and hiking books. His most recent FalconGuides were Best Easy Day Hikes Eugene (with his wife, Lynn Bernstein) and Weird Hikes (Second Edition). An avid hiker and naturalist with an MS in natural resources from the University of Michigan, Art grew up in Detroit but has lived in Grants Pass and Central Point, Oregon, since 1970.

VIC HARRIS is a graduate of Ohio State University with a major in natural resources. He worked for many years as a forester and later as director of the Josephine County (Oregon) Forestry Department. A hiker and avid mountain marathon runner, Vic spends almost every outside-the-office moment exploring Oregons forests, mountains, and rivers.

The original coauthor of Hiking Southern Oregon, Zach Urness, has moved away and now works as an outdoors reporter for the Salem Statesman newspaper. Vic Harris, graduate forester and former administrator of the Josephine County (Oregon) Forestry Department, earned a heartfelt acknowledgment in the original edition as a principal informant and one of our areas more knowledgeable hiking (and trail running and mountain marathon) enthusiasts. With Zach gone, Vic is now coauthor. In subsequent editions, with Art Bernstein (me) now in his late seventies, Vic should become the principal author.

The authors also wish to thank Gabe Howe and the Siskiyou Mountain Club of Ashland. Despite a shoestring budget, Howe and the group he cofounded have kept trails in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness open despite the devastation wreaked by the 2002 Biscuit Fire. Without their work, the trails to many spectacular places might have disappeared forever.

Finally, the authors wish to thank the employees of the federal agencies that administer the lands and trails described in this book. In most cases, they bent over backwards to be helpful and provide information.
