The modern world can often lure us into a false sense of security; we have everything we need available almost instantly. With the advent of the internet we can get virtually everything delivered, we could potentially live our entire lives without having to actually get a single thing.

A therein lies the problem.

We have become accustomed to our every need being easily satisfied, and that includes our regular need for food and water. Take a moment and think about how long you could last based on just what you have stored in your home?

One week, two maybe?

Once again were living in a false sense of security; the bubble of the world we live in could burst at any moment. Look at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and all of the crazy weather phenomenon we see every year massive floods, huge blizzards preparation is just basic common sense. Very often people hear the word prepper and immediately think of guys living in the woods who think zombies are going to cause the end of the world but nothing could be further from the truth.

Most preppers are just average everyday folks who realize that the world is a fragile place.

If the freak weather doesnt catch you out maybe the aftermath of economic collapse or a pandemic will, this isnt scare mongering these are all factual events that have happened somewhere in the world very recently. Just because you may live in a more developed part of the world doesnt give you protection from these things, if anything it means were less prepared than most.

Chapter 1 - Prepping Basics

B efore we move onto the specifics of prepping food we need to ensure that we have the basics covered, if youre reading a book of this nature its a fair assumption that most of this information will be familiar to you, for that reason I wont spend long on it.

However for the newer members of the prepping world there are a number of basics we must cover before we can look at specific areas. Having an abundant food store at home wont help you if you cant get home or extreme temperatures mean that simply surviving to eat the food you have stored is an issue. In order to survive we need to plan for much more than simply having food to eat.

Being prepared is a state of mind as much as anything; you should constantly be vigilant for news items that could potentially affect you, not only that increasing your level of supplies should be a long term goal something youre constantly learning about and adapting.

This book and books like it are a great starting point to get the mind focused on protecting your life and the lives of your loved ones. Prepping isnt free and Ill be honest it isnt particularly glamorous all the time - but its needed, even if you never used a single item the investment is worth it for peace of mind alone.

If youre a homeowner youll likely have some form of home insurance which you pay for I bet you dont walk up to your front door and hope that there has been an electrical fire while you were out just so you can use your home insurance!

Along with ample food you should also consider the practicalities of long term survival off the grid no government help, no power, no police protection, no running water...the list is endless. In the event of a really serious issue modern life could cease to exist we know it. You need to be to have a method planned out for all of these areas.

First things first though, without food and water you wont be around to see the long term so lets get going.
