Introduction
This book is going to be funand youll learn stuff, too. It will also keep you busy so you wont be tempted to fight with your brother or sister, or kick the back of anybodys seat. It will also prevent whining (unless youre getting really hungry). One warning: this book will not keep you from having to stop at the gas station to go to the bathroom!
So grab your gear and get ready to hit the road!
Down Memory Lane
Ask your parent(s) to tell you about family vacations they took when they were kids. Were they quiet in the car, or did they keep asking, Are we there yet? Did your grandparents make them stop every two hours to go to the bathroom?
Then find out, too, of course, what wonderful things they saw. And what really surprised them about a trip. Do they take you to some of the places they used to visit? Ask them whats the same and what has changed.
Know Before You Go
Print out the Web site (or part of it) for the place youre visiting. If youre traveling through the United States, or traveling in another country, go to the sites for every city youll visit. You can learn a lot about the things to do there, and what there is to see. Take the printouts on your trip and teach stuff to your parents!
What to Pack for Food
Of course, you could stuff yourself with gas station candy bars all day, but youd turn into a sugar zombie or something.
Instead, take along some snacks that are better for you, and not very messy. These goodies dont get instantly rotten or smashed too easily:
Small boxes of raisins
Foil packages of cherry tomatoes
Salt-free peanuts, cashews, or almonds, in a tin
Carrot and celery sticks
Wrapped burritos (with no meat to spoil)
Orange slices (peel the oranges and separate the sections before you leave home)
Grapes
The fruits and vegetables naturally have a lot of water in them, so theyll quench your thirst, too.
In this word grid, see if you can find fifteen things you might spot when driving along the highway. The words can go backwards, forwards, up, down, and diagonally.
BILLBOARD CONSTRUCTION
EXIT SIGN GUARDRAIL
MILE MARKER
MOTELS
POLICE CAR
REST AREA
ROUTE NUMBER
RV
SKIDS
TOLLBOOTH
TOUR BUS
TRUCK
TRUCK STOP
Extra puzzle points: After you have circled all the listed words, read the leftover letters from left to right, and top to bottom. You will find a fast fact about how many miles of paved roads there are in the world.
What to Pack for Fun
You dont need to go out and buy a lot of stuff, but look for which of these things you have already at home. Dump them in your own backpack with your name on it in big letters. That way you can share when you want to, and youll know what things are yours when its time to put them away.
