During the heyday of spas, two luxurious hotels, owned by flamboyant competing visionaries, attracted the rich and famous to southern Indiana. Hotel guests came from throughout the United States in search of cures and pleasure. Among the many noted celebrities visiting the French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs Hotels were Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Al Capone, Joe Lewis, and professional golfer Walter Hagen, and the West Baden Springs Hotel was known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. After years of neglect, the two hotels have been restored to their original splendor. Legalization of gambling and the building of a riverboat casino between the hotels have lured pleasureseekers to celebrate modernday opulence and recreation.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I am indebted to several people who have contributed to the production of this book. My wife, Barbara Clark Smith, has participated in the collection of these postcards for nearly 40 years. I thank her for her patient search through thousands of postcards at antique shows and antique malls to find those relevant to French Lick and West Baden Springs. My son and law partner, Thompson Smith, has made law office facilities available to assist in the production of this book. Lorene Thiele has done the computer input and organization, assisted by my secretary, Darlah Brennan. Craig Berndt and Bill Lock have provided research and encouragement. Arcadia editor Anna Wilson has assured getting the book into print in accordance with the high standards of Arcadia. The quiet behind-the-scenes efforts of a good editor always make an author look good.

This book is dedicated to Lee Sinclair and Ed Ballard, who lived the dream of the West Baden Springs Hotel; to Thomas Taggart Sr. and Thomas Taggart Jr., who lived the dream of French Lick Springs Hotel; to Reid Williamson, former president of Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, who dreamed of the renaissance of the West Baden Springs Hotel and French Lick Springs Hotel; to state representative Jerry Denbo and the Orange Shirts, whose dogged efforts induced the Indiana General Assembly to authorize Indianas 11th casino at French Lick-West Baden; and to William and Gayle Cook, who provided the largesse to preserve and restore the historic West Baden Springs and French Lick Springs Hotels.

I am indebted to those photographers and merchants who had the foresight to create and distribute the original postcards. While postcards have a fleeting ephemeral quality to them, those pack rats who have collected and saved them have provided us a vision of these hotels that would have otherwise been lost after the click of the camera and the thunk of the postmark.
