Introduction: Anatomy of a Sock
Picture 12

Many knitters, from beginners to advanced, are intimidated by the idea of knitting socks. However, most sock patterns do not require any additional or special knitting skills. Socks are one of the more forgiving projects in hiding mistakes because they are worn inside of shoes! This book aims to break down the sock knitting process into manageable sections and provide knitters of all experience levels with confidence in their ability to knit socks.

Tip #1: Grab a sock you already own and try to identify the different parts! It is easier than you may realize!

B efore heading straight into the Cast-On, it is imperative to know how socks are structured, how to choose a pattern that matches skill level, how to choose appropriate yarn for the design, and how to choose suitable needles for the thread. This guide does assume some basic knitting knowledge; however, explanations and resources will be given whenever possible to ensure no knitter is left behind. Additionally, a glossary of terms and abbreviations is available at the end of this book. Socks are made up of four to six different parts, depending on the pattern. These sections, listed in order of discussion, are Toe, Foot, Gusset, Heel, Leg, and Cuff.
