Miquel Nicols Amors (Valencia, 1959) Philology D. and professor of Catalan Philology at the Universitat de Valncia, where he has held academic responsibilities and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in different academic careers since 1986. He specializes in issues of social history of the Catalan language, sociolinguistics, language assessment and management of multilingualism in educational contexts. He has also participated in several research projects and published in different languages studies such La histria de la llengua catalana: la construcci dun discurs (Barcelona: PAM, 1998) and Histria de la llengua catalana (Barcelona: Ediuoc, 2011), co-authored with Antoni Ferrando.
Emili Boix-Fuster is full professor of sociolinguistics, Department of Catalan Philology, University of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He regularly teaches sociolinguistics, language planning and applied linguistics. He has published, among others, Sociolinguistics of the Catalan Language [in Catalan] (co-edited with F.X. Vila, Ariel 1998), Democratic Policies for Language Revitalisation: The Case of Catalan (co-edited with M. Strubell, Palgrave, 2011) and Languages on the Coach. Family Plurilingualism in the Catalan-Speaking Territories [in Catalan] (co-edited with R.M. Torrens Pags, 2012). He is editor of the academic journal Treballs de Sociolingstica Catalana.
Guus Extra has held the Chair of Language and Minorities at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, in the School of Humanities, Department of Culture Studies from 19812011. From 19982008, he was Director of Babylon, Centre for Studies of the Multicultural Society. Guus Extra has an extensive record in research and publications on second language acquisition, first language use/maintenance/loss by immigrant minority groups, and multilingualism and education, both at the national (Dutch) and the European level. He also has an extensive record in coordinating research in these domains, at both levels. He was a member of the steering committees for the Dutch Science Foundation Programme on Multilingualism and Minorities in the Netherlands (19881994) and for the DSF Programme on The Multicultural and Pluriform Society (19982002). He was also a member of the international management team for the European Science Foundation Programme on Second Language Acquisition by Adult Immigrants (19821988) and coordinator of the Multilingual Cities Project funded by the European Cultural Foundation (19982004). From 1982, he supervised 37 successfully defended dissertations and acted as a referee of research proposals and grant applications for the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO), the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW), the Flemish Science Foundation (NFWO), the European Science Foundation (ESF), and the South Africa Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD). He spent sabbaticals in the non-European English-dominant immigration contexts of the USA (Stanford/California, 1978/1979), South Africa (Durban/Kwazulu Natal, 1997), and Australia (Melbourne/Victoria, 2006). He has given conference keynotes, guest lectures, seminars and workshops in each of these three countries, in 17 European countries, in Morocco and in Japan.
Iago Gonzlez-Pascual graduated in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Vigo and in Linguistics from the University of Barcelona. He obtained an MA in Audiovisual Translation from the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona and an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Vigo. He has worked as a research assistant in sociolinguistic projects and he currently works as a translator. He has also lectured in Translation. His main research interests include sociolinguistics, language planning and policy and discourse analysis.
Philippe Hambye is professor of French linguistics at the University of Louvain (UCL, Belgium). His research mainly includes works in sociolinguistics regarding variation of linguistic norms and practices in the French-speaking area, language practices in education and at work, and language policies. These works aim at discovering the role language plays in issues of legitimacy, power and social inequalities.
